Moyúa
Moyúa, or Elliptic Square, is a public square located in the center of Bilbao's extension, in the district of Abando. The square was conceived in 1876 as a central hub in the middle of Gran Vía de Don Diego López de Haro avenue, from where the main eight streets depart in radius-like shape and was merely called ''Elliptic Square'' because of its form. The square was refurbished in the 1940s to adopt its current form, with a central fountain and several gardens in French and English styles, and was renamed to honour a former mayor of the city, Federico Moyúa. The square as is today was totally rebuilt in 1997 after six years of works to build the Bilbao Metro. ''Moyua'' metro station (spelt without accent) is the closest to the famous Guggenheim Museum. Trains on both lines 1 and 2 call at the station, sharing the same tracks and platforms. It is also the terminus for Bilbobus routes 1 and 76. Federico Moyúa
Federico de Moyúa y Salazar (17 June 1873 - 7 March 1939) was a Spanish politician who served as the mayor of Bilbao. Biography Moyúa was a member of a wealthy liberal family, both his father and grandfather served in the Third Carlist War. He studied law at the University of Deusto and practiced only for a few years. A member of the Liberal Fusionist Party, he was elected mayor in 1910, and was succeeded by Benito Marco Gardoqui in 1913. He served again in 1924, during the Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, until 1930. During his term, he promoted infrastructure. Among the greatest achievements of his term includes the , the Deusto Bridge, the City Hall Bridge, and the Ribera Market. Moyúa tried to expand Bilbao by incorporating the municipalities on the banks of the estuary, but was ultimately unachieved. Moyúa Plaza in Bilbao is dedicated to his name. Moyua Station
Moyua is a station on lines 1 and 2 of the Bilbao metro. The station is located in the neighborhood of Abando, in the district with the same name. The station is located under the Moyua Plaza, named after Federico Moyúa, mayor of Bilbao during the early 20th century. It opened on 11 November 1995. It is the second most used station of the network after Abando, and is the closest station in distance to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Abando
Abando, formerly known as ''San Vicente de Abando'', is one of the eight districts of Bilbao, Basque Country (Spain). It covers most of the city's centre, located on the left bank of the estuary of Bilbao. It is the only district of Bilbao with all of its land completely urbanised. Abando was originally an elizate and also a municipality until 1876, when part of it was annexed to Bilbao, the rest of the elizate's municipal land was integrated into Bilbao in 1890. In 2016 the population was 50,903. Abando is the wealthiest district in Bilbao, with personal and family incomes being well above the citywide average. Gran Vía De Don Diego López De Haro
The Gran Vía de Don Diego López de Haro is the main avenue of the city of Bilbao, Basque Country (Spain). History It's named after the founder of the city, Diego López de Haro V, lord of Biscay. It was conceived in 1876, when the extension (ensanche) of Bilbao was planned by architects Alzola, Achúcarro and Hoffmeyer in the wide plains of the former municipality of Abando. Features The avenue is 50 meters wide and 1.5 km (one mile) long. It starts at the Circular square, beside the BBVA building, and ends at the Sacred Heart square. Bilbobus
Bilbobus is the name for metropolitan bus services in Bilbao. The service is owned by the city council of Bilbao. Operations will be transferred to Veolia Transport, the company that won the contract in May 2008. The buses can be distinguished by their red colour and large white lettering, and there are 28 major lines serving the city, with eight smaller lines connecting the town centre with neighborhoods with narrow streets where normal buses can't drive. Plus eight night lines, called Gautxori. Bilbobus has recently won a European Union prize for service excellence. It is part of a wider transport network operated by the Basque government, recent additions to which include the Metro Bilbao underground and the tram line.
