Mount Plymouth
Mount Plymouth or Mount Osorno is a conspicuous peak rising to 520 m in the northeast extremity of Dryanovo Heights, Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. The peak has precipitous and partly ice-free northern slopes, and surmounts Teteven Glacier to the northwest, Quito Glacier to the northeast and Traub Glacier to the southeast. The feature was charted by the Discovery Investigations and named after the city of Plymouth, England. Location The peak is located at which is 3.1 km east by north of Sevtopolis Peak, 5.1 km west-southwest of Spark Point, 4.47 km north-northeast of Tile Ridge and 4.9 km northeast of Lloyd Hill (British mapping in 1935 and 1968, Chilean in 1947, Argentine in 1953, and Bulgarian in 2005 and 2009). Plymouth
Plymouth () is a port city and unitary authority in South West England. It is located on the south coast of Devon, approximately south-west of Exeter and south-west of London. It is bordered by Cornwall to the west and south-west. Plymouth's early history extends to the Bronze Age when a first settlement emerged at Mount Batten. This settlement continued as a trading post for the Roman Empire, until it was surpassed by the more prosperous village of Sutton founded in the ninth century, now called Plymouth. In 1588, an English fleet based in Plymouth intercepted and defeated the Spanish Armada. In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers departed Plymouth for the New World and established Plymouth Colony, the second English settlement in what is now the United States of America. During the English Civil War, the town was held by the Roundhead, Parliamentarians and was besieged between 1642 and 1646. Greenwich Island (South Shetland Islands)
Greenwich Island (variant historical names ''Sartorius Island'', ''Berezina Island'') is an island long and from (average ) wide, lying between Robert Island and Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands. Surface area . The name Greenwich Island dates back to at least 1821 and is now established in international usage. The Chilean base Arturo Prat and the Ecuadorian base Pedro Vicente Maldonado are situated on the northeast and north coast of the island respectively. Chilean scientists have claimed that Amerinds visited the area, due to stone artifacts recovered from bottom-sampling operations off the island; however, the artefacts — two arrowheads — were later found to have been planted. Lloyd Hill
Lloyd Hill is an ice-covered hill rising to 335 m in the southwest of Dryanovo Heights, Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. The hill surmounts Teteven Glacier to the north and Murgash Glacier to the southeast. The name derives from 'Lloyd's Land', an early name for Greenwich Island. Tile Ridge
Tile Ridge (''Rid Tile'' ) is a partly ice-free ridge of elevation 240 m in Dryanovo Heights, Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. The ridge is named after the ancient Tile (Tylis), capital town of the Celtic Kingdom in Thrace, 279–213 BC, and ancestor of the present Bulgarian settlement of Tulovo near Stara Zagora City. Spark Point
Spark Point, also ''Canto Point'', is a rocky point forming the northwest side of the entrance to both Discovery Bay and Galápagos Cove, and the east side of the entrance to Jambelí Cove in the northeast of Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. The point ends up in a conspicuous monolithic formation and has an adjacent ice-free area of .L.L. Sevtopolis Peak
Sevtopolis Peak ( bg, връх Севтополис, vrah Sevtopolis, ) is an ice-covered peak of elevation 300 m in Dryanovo Heights, Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. Surmounting Teteven Glacier to the west, north and east. The peak is named after the ancient Thracian capital city of Sevtopolis near the present day Bulgarian city of Kazanlak. Discovery Investigations
The Discovery Investigations were a series of scientific cruises and shore-based investigations into the biology of whales in the Southern Ocean. They were funded by the British Colonial Office and organised by the Discovery Committee in London, which was formed in 1918. They were intended to provide the scientific background to stock management of the commercial Antarctic whale fishery. The work of the Investigations contributed hugely to our knowledge of the whales, the krill they fed on, and the oceanography of their habitat, while charting the local topography, including Atherton Peak. The investigations continued until 1951, with the final report being published in 1980. Laboratory Shore-based work on South Georgia took place in the marine laboratory, Discovery House, built in 1925 at King Edward Point and occupied until 1931. Dryanovo ( bg, Дряново, ) is a Bulgarian town situated at the northern foot of the Balkan Mountains in Gabrovo Province; amphitheatrically along the two banks of Dryanovo River, a tributary to the Yantra River. Traub Glacier
Traub Glacier is a glacier on Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica extending 2.5 km in northwest-southeast direction and 4 km in southwest-northeast direction and draining the east slopes of Dryanovo Heights to flow eastwards into Discovery Bay. Quito Glacier
Quito Glacier () is a glacier draining the northeast slopes of Mount Plymouth and flowing northeastwards into the sea west of Canto Point in north Greenwich Island, South Shetland Islands.
