The Monument "Motherland" Matveev Kurgan (russian: Памятник "Родина-Мать" в Матвеев Кургане) is a Russian monument located near the village of Starorotovka. History The monument is located on the departure from the settlement of Matveev Kurgan near the village Starorotovka, 300 meters from the route Rostov-on-Don (Russia)-Donetsk (Ukraine). On a high pedestal there is an artificial green barrow, a sculpture of a mother with a child in her arms. The monument is made of concrete. The sculptor is Perfilov V. I. Its height is 8 meters. There is a flower bed that leads to the monument where during spring bright poppies blossom, symbolizing blood spots on the black earth. Matveyev Kurgan (russian: Матвеев Курган) is a rural locality (a ''settlement'') and the administrative center of Matveyevo-Kurgansky District, Rostov Oblast, Russia. Demographics Its population has grown over the decades: History The Russians started settling this territory district in the beginning of the 18th century under the orders of Peter I. The Mius river basin was settled especially in the second half of the 1770s and early 1780s. Thus, the history of the village of Matveev Kurgan dates to 1780.
