Donetsk ( , ; uk, Донецьк, translit=Donets'k ; russian: Донецк ), formerly known as Aleksandrovka, Yuzivka (or Hughesovka), Stalin and Stalino (see also: Names of European cities in different languages (C–D), cities' alternative names), is an industrial city in eastern Ukraine located on the Kalmius River in Donetsk Oblast. The population was estimated at in the city core, with over 2 million in the metropolitan area (2011). The Donetsk National Academic Ukrainian Musical and Drama Theatre is a theatre in Donetsk, Ukraine. It was founded in 1927 and was awarded national status in November 2009. Donbass Palace is the first 5-star hotel in Donetsk that joined The Leading Hotels of the World (2005). History Hotel "Donbass" was built in 1938 upon the plans of N. Rechanikov and A. Shuvalova. During the construction, the project was redesigned by N. Porkhunov. Panteley Tamurov supervised construction. During the Nazi occupation of Donetsk, the Gestapo was headquartered in the hotel; the building was partially destroyed during the war. From 1947 to 1949, the building was renovated, but the dome was not restored due to lack of funds. In 1971, the Donbas National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture conducted restoration works. The hotel was considered an architectural monument of the Donetsk region.
