Morningstar Farms
Morningstar Farms (stylized as MorningStar Farms) is a division of the Kellogg Company that produces vegan and vegetarian food. Many of their offerings are plant-based variations of traditionally meat products. Their products include meatless chicken nuggets, popcorn chicken, corn dogs, breakfast sausage, burgers, hot dogs, bacon, and pizza snack rolls with vegan cheese. Originally, Morningstar offered some, but not all vegan products. In 2019, Morningstar Farms announced all products would be vegan by 2021, but as of December 2022 this is still not true. History Morningstar Farms was introduced by Worthington Foods (originally a division of Miles Laboratories). The frozen food line of soy-based meatless meats was introduced into supermarkets and grocery stores in the U.S. in 1975. It was widely advertised and introduced Americans to the use of soy as a base for meat analogs. Kellogg's purchased Worthington Foods from Bayer AG's North American division for $307 million in ...

Meat Substitutes
A meat alternative or meat substitute (also called plant-based meat or fake meat, sometimes pejoratively) is a food product made from vegetarian or vegan ingredients, eaten as a replacement for meat. Meat alternatives typically approximate qualities of specific types of meat, such as mouthfeel, flavor, appearance, or chemical characteristics. Plant- and fungus-based substitutes are frequently made with soy (e.g. tofu, tempeh, and textured vegetable protein), but may also be made from wheat gluten as in seitan, pea protein as in the Beyond Burger, or mycoprotein as in Quorn. Meat alternatives are typically consumed as a source of dietary protein by vegetarians, vegans, and people following religious and cultural dietary laws. However, global demand for sustainable diets has also increased their popularity among non-vegetarians and flexitarians seeking to reduce the environmental impact of meat production. Meat substitution has a long history. Tofu was invented in China as earl ...

Vegan Cheese
Vegan cheese is a category of non-dairy, plant-based cheese analogues. Vegan cheeses range from soft fresh cheeses to aged and cultured hard grateable cheeses like plant-based Parmesan. The defining characteristic of vegan cheese is the exclusion of ''all'' animal products. Vegan cheese can be made with components derived from vegetables, such as proteins, fats and milks ( plant milks). It also can be made from seeds, such as sesame, sunflower, nuts ( cashew, pine nut, peanuts, almond) and soybeans; other ingredients are coconut oil, nutritional yeast, tapioca, rice, potatoes and spices.  History Non-dairy cheese originated in China in the 16th century and was made with fermented tofu or whole soy. Later homemade vegan cheeses were made from soy flour, margarine, and yeast extract. With harder margarine, this can produce a hard vegan cheese that can be sliced; softer margarine produces a softer, spreadable cheese. The product became commercially available around the 1970s ...

Vegetarian Hot Dogs
A vegetarian hot dog is a hot dog produced completely from non-meat products. Unlike traditional home-made meat sausages, the casing is not made of intestine, but of cellulose or other plant-based ingredients. The filling is usually based on some sort of soy protein, wheat gluten, or pea protein. Some may contain egg whites, which would make them unsuitable for a lacto-vegetarian or vegan diet. History The history of the vegetarian hot dog is not clear, but Worthington Foods' ''Veja-Link meatless wieners'' claim to have been the world's first vegetarian hot dogs in 1949. Since the 1980s, a number of other manufacturers have entered the vegetarian hot dog market, such as Lightlife Foods, Field Roast Grain Meat Co, and Beyond Meat. Massachusetts-based LightLife first sold its Tofu Pups in 1985. In 2000, the Chicago White Sox's Comiskey Park became the first baseball venue to sell vegetarian hot dogs during games. In 2019, Moving Mountains began selling a vegan hot dog in London ...
