Montréal-Dorion
Montréal-Dorion was a former provincial electoral district in the Montreal region of Quebec, Canada that elected members to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. It was created for the 1912 election from part of Hochelaga electoral district. Its final election was in 1936. It disappeared in the 1939 election and its successor electoral districts were Montréal–Jeanne-Mance and Montréal-Mercier. Georges Mayrand (August 21, 1876 – January 20, 1951) was a Canadian politician. Born in Saint-Charles-de-Grondines, Quebec, Mayrand was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec for Montréal-Dorion in 1912. A Liberal, he was re-elected in 1916 and defeated in 1919. Aurèle Lacombe (January 28, 1887 – March 6, 1963) was a politician Quebec, Canada and a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec (MLA). Joseph-Achille Francoeur
Joseph-Achille Francoeur (August 28, 1882 – January 21, 1959) was a plumber and political figure in Quebec. He represented Montréal-Dorion from 1931 to 1935 and Montréal-Mercier from 1939 to 1948 in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec as a Liberal. Francoeur was born in Cap-Saint-Ignace, Quebec, the son of Auguste Francoeur and Avila Caron, and was educated there. He apprenticed in Rivière-du-Loup and Quebec City and established a heating system business in Montreal. He invented a hot water furnace. In 1913, he married Léonie Bienvenue Francoeur. Francoeur ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Quebec assembly in 1927. He was elected in 1931, but was defeated by Grégoire Bélanger when he ran for reelection in 1935 and 1936. He was elected in 1939 and re-elected in 1944. He served as a whip for the Liberal party and was a minister without portfolio in the Quebec cabinet in 1944. Hochelaga (provincial Electoral District)
Hochelaga was a former provincial electoral district in the province of Quebec, Canada. It was created for the 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada). Its final election was in 1908. It disappeared in the 1912 election and was redistributed into Laval, Maisonneuve, Montréal-Dorion, Montréal-Laurier, Montréal-Hochelaga, Westmount, and Jacques-Cartier, with small parts going to Montréal–Saint-Georges and Montréal–Sainte-Marie. It was named after the former aboriginal village of Hochelaga on the site where Montreal now stands. The village existed when the explorer Jacques Cartier discovered territories that became New France. 1939 Quebec General Election
The 1939 Quebec general election was held on October 25, 1939, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Quebec, Canada. The Quebec Liberal Party, led by former premier Adélard Godbout, defeated the incumbent Union Nationale, led by Maurice Duplessis. This was Godbout's second non-consecutive term of office and his only victory out of four consecutive general elections opposing Duplessis. The Action libérale nationale, which had won 25 seats in the 1935 election and then merged with the Quebec Conservative Party, was re-formed by Paul Gouin, who had split with Duplessis soon after the formation of the Union Nationale. However the ALN obtained only 4.5% of the vote and no seats. It soon disbanded. Also, a rump Conservative Party ran three candidates who won 0.2% of the vote and no seats. This party also disbanded. The Conservative Party of Quebec (french: Parti conservateur du Québec) was a political party in Quebec, Canada, from 1867 until 1936, when it merged with members of the Action libérale nationale to form the Union Nationale. Origins The party originated as the ''Parti bleu'' which was formed around 1850. The ''parti bleu'' opposed the anti-clericalism of its rival, the '' parti rouge''. The ''parti bleu'' supported the role of the clergy in Quebec society. Members of the ''parti bleu'', led by George-Étienne Cartier from Canada East, joined with the followers of Sir John A. Macdonald in Canada West to form a coalition government with Cartier as co-premier from 1857 to 1862.
