Monkeytown, West Virginia
Monkeytown is a small hamlet in Pendleton County, West Virginia, United States, on the mountain slope above the hamlet of Riverton. It is located on U.S. Route 33 on the western face of North Fork Mountain. This town was never incorporated as a town, but has existed as an area relevant to local people. The area was inhabited by Native American tribes long before being settled by European immigrants. Those who now live in the area are a mixture of German, Swiss, Irish, Scottish, and English descent. The population is now less than fifty people. History The town allegedly got its name from the local general store where its owner kept a pet monkey, and from that people began calling the place 'monkey town.'. North Fork Mountain
North Fork Mountain is a quartzite-capped mountain ridge in the Ridge and Valley physiographic province of the Allegheny Mountains (or "High Alleghenies" or "Potomac Highlands") of eastern West Virginia. Kile Knob, at 4,588 feet (1,398 m), is the mountain's highest point, and Panther Knob and Pike Knob are nearly as high. Pendleton Times
The ''Pendleton Times'' is a newspaper serving Franklin, West Virginia, and surrounding Pendleton County. Published weekly, it has a circulation of 4,226 and is owned by Pendleton Times LLC. The paper is Pendleton County's only newspaper and considered by the Pendleton County Commission as the local paper of record. History Founded in 1913 as an independent newspaper by resident William McCoy, by 1921 it had a circulation of 1,715.
