Moises Teixeira Da Silva
Moises Teixeira da Silva is a convicted robber who escaped São Paulo, Brazil's Carandiru prison with about 100 others through a tunnel in 2001. He was serving a 25-year sentence at the time. Since his escape, da Silva is suspected of masterminding two major bank robberies in Brazil in 2005. Carandiru Prison
Carandiru Penitentiary, officially São Paulo House of Detention (Portuguese: ''Casa de Detenção de São Paulo'') was a prison located in São Paulo, Brazil. The prison was designed and built by Samuel das Neves in 1920, when it was considered a model-prison to meet the new demands of the 1890 criminal code. It was operational from 1956 to 2002 and, at its peak, was South America's largest penitentiary, housing over 8,000 inmates. In 1992 it was the site of the Carandiru massacre. It was demolished in 2002. Drauzio Varella, a noted Brazilian physician, volunteered as an unpaid physician in Carandiru from 1989 to 2001, in particular to address its AIDS epidemic. He wrote a book, '' Estação Carandiru'' ( en, Carandiru Station), describing his own experiences there and the dreadful conditions of the inmates. The Banco Central burglary at Fortaleza was the theft of about Brazilian real, R$160 million from the vault of the Central Bank of Brazil, Banco Central branch located in Fortaleza, in the state of Ceará, Brazil, on August 6, 2005. It is one of the List of bank robbers and robberies, world's largest heists. In the aftermath of the burglary, of the 25 people thought to be involved, only 8 had been arrested, and R$20 million recovered, up to the end of 2005.
