Miss Vermont USA
The Miss Vermont USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Vermont in the Miss USA pageant. It is formerly directed by Sanders & Associates, Inc., dba- Pageant Associates based in Buckhannon, West Virginia from 2004 to 2017 before GDB Theatre and Pageant Productions becoming the new directors of the stage pageant since 2018. Vermont produced a Miss USA, Carlene King Johnson in 1955. The most recent placement was by Kelsey Golonka in 2022 after 40 years, who reached the semifinals. Vermont holds the record for most Miss Congeniality awards, having earned a total of five. Five Miss Vermont USAs have competed at Miss Teen USA, four as Miss Vermont Teen USA, and one as Miss New York Teen USA. Three have also competed at Miss America, including Miss USA 1955 Carlene King Johnson, the second out of five Miss USA winners who competed at both pageants. Miss America
Miss America is an annual competition that is open to women from the United States between the ages of 17 and 25. Originating in 1921 as a "bathing beauty revue", the contest is now judged on competitors' talent performances and interviews. As of 2018, there is no longer a swimsuit portion to the contest, or consideration of physical appearance. Miss America travels about 20,000 miles a month, changing her location every 24 to 48 hours, touring the nation and promoting her particular platform of interest. The winner is crowned by the previous year's titleholder. The current Miss America is Grace Stanke of Wisconsin, who was crowned Miss America 2023 on December 15, 2022. Miss USA 1955 was the 4th Miss USA pageant, held at Long Beach Municipal Auditorium, Long Beach, California on July 20, 1955. The pageant was won by Carlene King Johnson of Vermont, who was crowned by outgoing titleholder Miriam Stevenson of South Carolina. King Johnson went on to finish as a Top 15 semi-finalist at Miss Universe 1955. First runner-up Margaret Haywood later went to London for Miss World 1955, finishing first runner-up to Susana Duijm of Venezuela. Miss USA 1966 was the 15th Miss USA pageant, televised live from Miami Beach, Florida, on May 21, 1966. The pageant was won by Maria Remenyi of California, who was crowned by outgoing titleholder Sue Downey of Ohio. Remenyi was the second woman from California to win the Miss USA title, and went on to Top 15 at Miss Universe 1966. Miss USA 1965
Miss USA 1965 was the 14th Miss USA pageant, held in Miami Beach, Florida on June 4, 1965. This was the first Miss USA pageant to be televised live (on the CBS network), and the first to be a self-contained production, held several weeks before, and independent of, the Miss Universe pageant. The pageant was won by Sue Downey of Ohio, who was crowned by outgoing titleholder Bobbi Johnson of the District of Columbia. Downey went on to place as 2nd runner-up to Apasra Hongsakula of Thailand at Miss Universe 1965. Miss USA 1964
Miss USA 1964 was the 13th Miss USA pageant, held in Miami Beach, Florida on July 29, 1964. This was the last Miss USA pageant to be held as an inclusive part of the Miss Universe event. The pageant was won by Bobbi Johnson of the District of Columbia, who was crowned by outgoing titleholder Marite Ozers of Illinois. Two days after her victory, Johnson went on to place as a top 15 semi-finalist at Miss Universe 1964. Johnson was the first woman from Washington D.C. to win the title. This was the latest Miss USA pageant ever held on this date until the 2020 competition. The rescheduling of the pageant as an independent event from Miss Universe in 1965 meant Johnson reigned for only 10 months and 6 days; apart from first runners-up who inherited the crown when Miss USA won Miss Universe, only 1986 titleholder Christy Fichtner had a shorter reign (8 months and 28 days). Miss USA 1963
Miss USA 1963 was the 12th Miss USA pageant, held in Miami Beach, Florida on July 17, 1963. The pageant was won by Marite Ozers of Illinois, who was crowned by outgoing titleholder Macel Leilani Wilson of Hawaii. Latvian-born Ozers was the first woman born outside the U.S. to take the Miss USA title, and the second delegate from Illinois to do so. Ozers went on to finish as a Top 15 semi-finalist at Miss Universe 1963. This was the first Miss USA to be broadcast on television, first aired on CBS that would be remained in the next 39 years. First runner-up Michele Metrinko later won the Miss World USA 1963 pageant and finished as a Top 14 semi-finalist at Miss World 1963. Miss USA 1962 was the 11th Miss USA pageant, held in Miami, Florida, on July 12, 1962. The pageant was won by Macel Leilani Wilson of Hawaii, who was crowned by outgoing titleholder Sharon Brown of Louisiana.
