Miss Universe 1979
Miss Universe 1979, the 28th Miss Universe pageant, was held on 20 July 1979 at the Perth Entertainment Centre in Perth, Australia. Margaret Gardiner (beauty queen), Margaret Gardiner of South Africa crowned her successor Maritza Sayalero of Venezuela. This marks as the first time a woman from Venezuela won the pageant. It was the first time in the pageant's history that the event was held in Australia. Notably, a large piece of debris from Skylab, which had fallen nine days earlier, was displayed on stage during coronation night. Immediately after the telecast ended, part of the stage collapsed, with several of the contestants falling into a gap below the set; none of them were injured. For the third time in the pageant's history (after 1961 and 1974), the first runner-up went on to be crowned Miss World 1979, Miss World later in the year. Maritza Sayalero
Maritza Sayalero Fernández (born February 16, 1961, in Caracas) is a Venezuelan designer, model, businesswoman and beauty queen. In 1979 she was crowned both Miss Venezuela and Miss Universe, the first woman from Venezuela to win this title. She is married to Mexican tennis player Raúl Ramírez, with whom she has lived in Mexico since 1981. For years she had a boutique where she sold items of her own design. Miss Venezuela Sayalero competed in 1979 as Miss Departamento Vargas in her country's national beauty pageant, Miss Venezuela. She won the crown and the right to represent her country in the Miss Universe 1979 pageant. Miss Universe 1978, the 27th Miss Universe pageant, was held on 24 July 1978 at the Centro de Convenciones de Acapulco in Acapulco, Mexico. It was the first time in the pageant's history that the event was held in Mexico. Margaret Gardiner of South Africa was crowned by Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad and Tobago at the end of the event.
