Miriam Davenport
Miriam Davenport or Miriam Davenport Ebel (June 6, 1915 – September 13, 1999) was an American painter and sculptor who played an important role in 1940 helping European Jews and intellectuals escape from German-occupied France and the Holocaust during World War II. After her return to the United States in late 1941, she worked on cultural issues in primarily academic settings. She also continued to support human rights organizations. Personal life and education Miriam Davenport was born on June 6, 1915, in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents were steam boat captain Howard Ernest Davenport and Florence L. (Sparrow) Davenport. Walter Mehring (29 April 1896 – 3 October 1981) was a German author and one of the most prominent satirical authors in the Weimar Republic. He was banned during the Third Reich, and fled the country. Early life He was the son of the translator and writer Sigmar Mehring. His literary career began with the Sturm and Berliner Dada movements.
