Miren-Kostanjevica
The Municipality of Miren-Kostanjevica (; sl, Občina Miren - Kostanjevica, it, Comune di Merna Castagnevizza) is a municipality in western Slovenia, on the border with Italy. Miren-Kostanjevica is part of the Goriška region of the Slovene Littoral, and its main settlements are Miren (the seat of the municipality) and Kostanjevica na Krasu. Miren is located in the lowest part of the Vipava Valley. Historically, the area was connected with the neighbouring village of Savogna d'Isonzo (Slovenian: ''Sovodnje ob Soči''), which was left in Italy after the Paris Peace Treaty of February 1947. Since the second half of the 19th century, Miren has been a commercial center and a center of light industry, strongly linked to the Gorizia and Monfalcone (Slovenian: ''Tržič'') urban areas. Kostanjevica na Krasu, on the other hand, is a center of a larger underpopulated rural area located on the high Karst Plateau. In the local self-government reform of 1994, the two centers united to form ...

Kostanjevica Na Krasu
Kostanjevica na Krasu (; it, Castagnevizza) is one of the main settlements and the administrative centre of the Municipality of Miren-Kostanjevica in the Littoral region of Slovenia. It is located in the northwestern part of the Karst Plateau, not far from Nova Gorica and the border with Italy. Name Kostanjevica was attested in written records in 1350 as ''Costangnawicz.'' Like other settlements that share the name (e.g., '' Kostanjevica'', ''Kostanjevica na Krki''), it is derived from the Slovene common noun ''kostanj'' ' chestnut', referring to the local vegetation. The name was changed to ''Kostanjevica na Krasu'' (literally, 'Kostanjevica on the Karst Plateau') in 1952. During the interwar period it was known as ''Castagnevizza del Carso'' in Italian. History Belonging to Austrian Littoral, it was part of County of Gorizia and Gradisca. During First World War, it was destroyed and its settlers were forced to leave it, sharing the destiny of many Slovene refugees affected by ...

Miren
Miren (; it, Merna) is an urbanized settlement in the Municipality of Miren-Kostanjevica in the Littoral region of Slovenia right next to the border with Italy. The hill known as Miren Castle ( sl, Mirenski grad) rises above the settlement to the south. Name The settlement was attested in written sources in 1494 as ''Merinach an der Wippach'', and in 1523 as ''Japinitz oder Merina''. The name is believed to have arisen through ellipsis of a noun phrase (e.g., *''miren grad'' 'walled castle'), leaving the adjective *''miren'' 'walled' (< *''myrьnъ''). If so, the name refers to the walls of Miren Castle above the settlement. A less likely theory derives the name from *''Marijin'' 'Mary's', referring to the pilgrimage church above the settlement.

Karst Plateau
The Karst Plateau or the Karst region ( sl, Kras, it, Carso), also locally called Karst, is a karst plateau region extending across the border of southwestern Slovenia and northeastern Italy. It lies between the Vipava Valley, the low hills surrounding the valley, the westernmost part of the Brkini Hills, northern Istria, and the Gulf of Trieste. The western edge of the plateau also marks the traditional ethnic border between Italians and Slovenes. The region gave its name to karst topography. For this reason, it is also referred to as the ''Classical Karst''. Geographical position The plateau rises quite steeply above the neighboring landscape, except for its northeastern side, where the steepness is less pronounced. The plateau gradually descends from the southeast to the southwest. On average it lies 334 m above sea level. Its western edge, known as the Karst Rim ( sl, Kraški rob), is a continuation of the Učka mountain range in eastern Istria, and rises to the east ...
