Minna Lachs
Minna Lachs (born as ''Minna Schiffmann''; 1907–1993) was an Austrian educator and memoirist. She was born in Terebovlia, then Trembowla in what was then referred to as the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. The events of World War I led them to leave for Vienna. Her father wished to distance himself from his Orthodox Judaism upbringing, but she initially felt a need to more strongly assert a Jewish identity. As part of that she joined a Zionist youth organization which ultimately led to an interest in Socialism and to meeting her husband. She went on to graduate from the University of Vienna with a thesis on Karl Emil Franzos. She fled Austria for Switzerland due to the Anschluss. Her memoir concerning the period was titled ''Warum schaust du zurueck''. She returned to Vienna after the war. Terebovlia
Terebovlia ( uk, Теребовля, pl, Trembowla, yi, טרעבעוולע, Trembovla) is a small city in Ternopil Raion, Ternopil Oblast (province) of western Ukraine. It is an ancient settlement that traces its roots to the settlement of Terebovl which existed in Kievan Rus'. The name may also be variously transliterated as Terebovlya, Terebovla, or Terebovlja. Terebovlia hosts the administration of Terebovlia urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. The population census was 13,661; current population is estimates as In 1913 the city counted 10,000 residents, of whom 4,000 were Poles, 3,200 were Rusyns (Ruthenians) and 2,800 were Jews. In 1929 there were 7,015 people, mostly Polish, Ukrainian and Jewish. Feuerhalle Simmering
Feuerhalle Simmering is a crematorium with attached urn burial ground in the Simmering (Vienna), Simmering district of Vienna, Austria. It lies at the end of an alley, directly opposite Vienna Central Cemetery's main gate. Description Opened on 17 December 1922 by Vienna's mayor Jakob Reumann, ''Feuerhalle Simmering'' was the first crematorium in Austria. It also constituted an element of the social and health services policy of Red Vienna. Advocates of cremation, especially from the labour movement – such as the ''Workers' Cremation Association "The Flame"'' –, had been campaigning for decades for crematoria in Austria, but applications were always rejected by the authorities. The history of the Jews in Austria probably begins with the Jewish diaspora, exodus of Jews from History of ancient Israel and Judah#Roman occupation, Judea under Roman occupation.
