Minipreço
Minipreço is a discount supermarket chain in Portugal, part of the Spanish Dia, which was formerly owned by the French supermarket company Carrefour. There were 534 stores across Portugal at the start of 2011, with one third of them being franchises. According to the ''Associação Portuguesa de Empresas de Distribuição'' (Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies), Minipreço had more stores in Portugal in 2010 than any other brand, ahead of Pingo Doce and Lidl. By the end of 2014 the number of Minipreço supermarkets had risen to 641, with 289 of them being franchises. It was formerly known as ''Companhia Nacional de Descontos''. Pingo Doce
Pingo Doce (Sweet Drop in English) is one of the largest supermarket operators in Portugal, with almost 400 stores (Continente is the largest food retailer, operating over 550 stores, while Minipreço has more than 500). It belongs to the Portuguese company Jerónimo Martins and the Dutch-based Ahold Delhaize. Since 1992, Pingo Doce has been operated as a joint venture by Jerónimo Martins, in which it holds 51% and the Dutch retail chain Ahold Delhaize 49%. In the 1990s, Jerónimo Martins acquired Brazilian supermarket chain ''Sé Supermercados'', which became the Brazilian equivalent to Pingo Doce. In Poland, since 1997 the group has established Biedronka, the country's largest food retail chain. Carrefour () is a French multinational retail and wholesaling corporation headquartered in Massy, France. Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG (; ) is a German international discount retailer chain that operates over 11,000 stores across Europe and the United States. Companhia Portuguesa De Hipermercados
Companhia Portuguesa de Hipermercados, S.A. was born in 1970 with the opening of the first supermarket Pão de Açúcar in Lisbon, in 1973, the first hypermarket Jumbo was open in Cascais. Later in 1984, the company starts the concept of their own brand products and in 1985, a second hypermarket Jumbo was born in Amoreiras (which was later turned into a Pão de Açúcar). The first ever hypermarket with bar code reading opened in Alfragide in 1988, while in the 1990s, more hypermarkets opened in Maia, Castelo Branco, Setúbal, Alverca, Santo Tirso, Gaia, Famalicão and Aveiro respectively.
