Minas De Corrales
Minas de Corrales is a town in the Rivera Department of northeastern Uruguay. Geography The town is located on the banks of the stream Arroyo Corrales, on the intersection of Route 28 with Route 29, about south of the city of Rivera. History In 1878 the mining company ''CompañÃa Francesa de Minas de Oro del Uruguay'' started looking for gold in the area, giving thus birth to the town. From the end of December 1879 to the start of March 1880 Henry Küss visited Uruguay to evaluate the gold concession on the Arroyo Corrales. The company was looking for at least 8 million francs to develop the mines. Küss undertook a careful survey of the mineralogy. His report was unenthusiastic, saying only that it might be worth spending two or three hundred thousand francs on a more systematic study. Uruguay consists of 19 departments (''departamentos''). Each department has a legislature called a Departmental Board. The ''Intendente'' is the department's chief executive. History The first division of the Republic into six departments occurred on 27 January 1816. In February of the same year, two more departments were formed, and in 1828 one more was added. When the First Constitution was signed in 1830, there were nine departments. These were the departments of Montevideo, Maldonado, Canelones, San José, Colonia, Soriano, Paysandú, Durazno and Cerro Largo. Uruguay's calling code is +598. Since 2010, national long distance calling was eliminated, thus there are no area codes in each city. Landline telephony ANTEL (Spanish abbreviation for National Administration of Telecommunications) is Uruguay's state-owned company for telecommunications. Previously in Uruguay, phone numbers used to have between 4 and 7 digits. To make a local phone call, you only had to dial those digits. To make a call between two cities from different departments, you had to dial zero, plus area code, plus phone number. As from August 29, 2010, all phone numbers have 8 digits, according to the new National Numbering Plan. Zero prior to area code was eliminated. Rivera () is the capital of Rivera Department of Uruguay. The border with Brazil joins it with the Brazilian city of Santana do Livramento, which is only a street away from it, at the north end of Route 5. Together, they form an urban area of around 200,000 inhabitants. As of the census of 2011, it is the sixth most populated city of Uruguay. Henry Küss
Henry Küss (or Henry Kuss, sometimes Henri Küss, 19 June 1852 – 22 November 1914) was a French mining engineer. After brilliant studies at the École Polytechnique and École des Mines he was placed in charge of the mineralogical sub-district around Grenoble. While holding this position, he made overseas trips to Uruguay, Mozambique, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Spain, Tunisia and Australia (twice) to assess the potential of mining concessions, earning a high reputation among financiers. He was appointed an inspector-general of mines, and made important contributions to mining education and mine safety and hygiene regulations. Rincón De Tres Cerros
Rincón de Tres Cerros (literally "corner of the three hills") is an area in Rivera Department of Uruguay, wedged between Tacuarembó River and stream Arroyo Cuñapirú (hence the toponym "corner"). The area owes its name to the three flat "mesas" or butte hills (''cerros'') aligned in a row, from the biggest in the South to the smallest in the north, which dominate the horizon. Their names are: "Cerro Zapato" or Espadrille, "Alpargata" (meaning "shoe", because of its shape, as seen from above), the biggest of the three, "Cerro del Medio" (meaning "hill of the middle") and "Cerro Chapeu" (meaning "hat" in Portuguese), being the smallest. The hills are mostly bare except for a few native woodland trees around the brim of the "table tops". Cerro Zapato has some Eucalyptus trees that were planted along its north-eastern flank and the eastern part of its top surface.
