Military Aviation Museum
The Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach, Virginia, is home to one of the world's largest collections of warbirds in flying condition. It includes examples from Germany, France, Italy, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, from both World War I and World War II, and its complete collection ranges from the 1910s to the early 1950s. Its mission is to "preserve, restore and fly these historic aircraft and to allow a new generation to experience and learn from what heir forebearsmight have endured in the skies so very far from home." Almost all of the historic aircraft at the Museum have been restored to flying condition and they fly in twice-yearly major airshows (one in the spring for World War II aircraft, and one in the fall for World War I aircraft) The collection also includes a large reference library, along with artifacts and materials to illustrate the historic context of the aircraft in the collection. Virginia Beach Airport
The Virginia Beach Airport is a private civilian airfield located in Pungo, Virginia, approximately {{convert, 4, mi, abbr=off South-East of Virginia Beach, Virginia. It is the home of the Military Aviation Museum, which uses it to maintain, display, and fly vintage and replica warbirds; the aircraft are primarily from the World War II era, but they range from the 1910s to the 1950s. The facilities include an Art Deco main building, one grass landing strip, a checkered water tower, and a large number of medium-size hangars. De Havilland Dragon Rapide
The de Havilland DH.89 Dragon Rapide is a 1930s short-haul biplane airliner developed and produced by British aircraft company de Havilland. Capable of accommodating 6–8 passengers, it proved an economical and durable craft, despite its relatively primitive plywood construction. Developed during the early 1930s, the Dragon Rapide was essentially a smaller, twin-engined version of the four-engined DH.86 Express, and shared a number of common features, such as its tapered wings, streamlined fairings and Gipsy Six engines. Nieuport 17
The Nieuport 17 C.1 (or Nieuport XVII C.1 in contemporary sources) was a French sesquiplane fighter designed and manufactured by the Nieuport company during World War I. An improvement over the Nieuport 11, it was a little larger than earlier Nieuports and better adapted to the more powerful engine than the interim Nieuport 16. Aside from early examples, it had the new Alkan-Hamy synchronization gear, permitting the use of a fuselage-mounted synchronised Vickers gun firing through the propeller disc. At the time of its introduction in March 1916, the type's outstanding manoeuvrability and excellent rate of climb gave it a significant advantage over fighters on both sides and was described as "the best pursuit plane of the day". Nieuport 11
The Nieuport 11 (or Nieuport XI C.1 in contemporary sources), nicknamed the ''Bébé'', was a French World War I single seat sesquiplane fighter aircraft, designed by Gustave Delage. It was the primary aircraft that ended the Fokker Scourge in 1916.Chant & Taylor 2007, p. 14. Royal Air Force Goxhill or RAF Goxhill is a former Royal Air Force station located east of Goxhill, on the south bank of the Humber Estuary, opposite the city of Kingston upon Hull, in north Lincolnshire, England. Origins During the First World War a Royal Flying Corps landing ground existed near the Lincolnshire village of Goxhill. Air traffic control (ATC) is a service provided by ground-based air traffic controllers who direct aircraft on the ground and through a given section of controlled airspace, and can provide advisory services to aircraft in non-controlled airspace. Cottbus Air Base
Cottbus Air Base (german: Flugplatz Cottbus-Nord – ''"Airport Cottbus-North"'') is a former military airport that is north-west of Cottbus in Brandenburg, Germany. History During World War II the air base in Cottbus was used by the Luftwaffe and during the 1970s and '80s by the National People's Army. Works Progress Administration
The Works Progress Administration (WPA; renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration) was an American New Deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers (mostly men who were not formally educated) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. It was set up on May 6, 1935, by presidential order, as a key part of the Second New Deal.
