Mike Tuffrey
Michael William Tuffrey is a British Liberal Democrat politician who served as a member of the London Assembly (AM) for Londonwide from 2002 to 2012. He took his seat on 18 February 2002 replacing Louise Bloom who had resigned. He was re-elected in 2004 and 2010 leading the Liberal Democrat group and chairing various London Assembly committees. He is a member of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority first appointed in 2002 and serving as leader of the Liberal Democrat Group 2006 to 2008. Tuffrey was appointed to the London Sustainable Development Commission in 2004 and reappointed by Boris Johnson for a second term in 2008. Tuffrey was narrowly beaten by former Metropolitan Police officer Brian Paddick in standing for nomination as the Liberal Democrats' candidate for Mayor of London in 2012. London Assembly
The London Assembly is a 25-member elected body, part of the Greater London Authority, that scrutinises the activities of the Mayor of London and has the power, with a two-thirds super-majority, to amend the Mayor's annual budget and to reject the Mayor's draft statutory strategies. The London Assembly was established in 2000. It is also able to investigate other issues of importance to Londoners (most notably Transport for London, transport or Natural environment, environmental matters), publish its findings and recommendations, as well as make proposals to the Mayor. Brixton
Brixton is a district in south London, part of the London Borough of Lambeth, England. The area is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London. Brixton experienced a rapid rise in population during the 19th century as communications with central London improved. Brixton is mainly residential, though includes Brixton Market and a substantial retail sector. It is a multi-ethnic community, with a large percentage of its population of Afro-Caribbean descent. 2012 London Mayoral Election
The 2012 London mayoral election was an election held on Thursday 3 May 2012, to elect the Mayor of London. It was held on the same day as the London Assembly election, and used a supplementary vote system. The election was won by the incumbent mayor Boris Johnson of the Conservative Party, who was seeking re-election for a second term as Mayor. Ken Livingstone, who had been Mayor between 2000 and 2008, was seeking a third, non-consecutive term as the Labour candidate. No other candidates received 5% of the vote (the threshold for retaining their deposit). As of the 2021 London mayoral election, this was the last time that London voted for a Conservative Party Mayor. Results : The turnout was 38.1%, a decrease from 45.33% in the previous election. Clapham () is a suburb in south west London, England, lying mostly within the London Borough of Lambeth, but with some areas (most notably Clapham Common) extending into the neighbouring London Borough of Wandsworth. History Early history The present day Clapham High Street is on the route of a Roman road. The road is recorded on a Roman monumental stone found nearby. According to its inscription, the stone was erected by a man named Vitus Ticinius Ascanius. It is estimated to date from the 1st century. The 1992 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 9 April 1992, to elect 651 members to the House of Commons. The election resulted in the fourth consecutive victory for the Conservative Party since 1979 and would be the last time that the Conservatives would win an overall majority at a general election until 2015. It was also the last general election to be held on a day which did not coincide with any local elections until 2017. A by-election for the United Kingdom House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons was held in the constituency of Vauxhall (UK Parliament constituency), Vauxhall on 15 June 1989, following the resignation of sitting Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) Stuart Holland. The winner, Kate Hoey, was Minister for Sport in Tony Blair's Labour Party (UK), Labour government from 1999 to 2001 before returning to the backbenches. The 1989 by-election was caused by Stuart Holland's resignation to take up an academic job in preference to remaining in the Labour Party.
