1989 Vauxhall By-election
A by-election for the United Kingdom House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons was held in the constituency of Vauxhall (UK Parliament constituency), Vauxhall on 15 June 1989, following the resignation of sitting Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) Stuart Holland. The winner, Kate Hoey, was Minister for Sport in Tony Blair's Labour Party (UK), Labour government from 1999 to 2001 before returning to the backbenches. The 1989 by-election was caused by Stuart Holland's resignation to take up an academic job in preference to remaining in the Labour Party. There was controversy surrounding the Labour candidate selection process. Martha Osamor had the most nominations, with Hoey only having one, but the National Executive Committee declined to shortlist Osamor and imposed a shortlist on the constituency party. Ted Budden
Edward Budden (died 2000) was a British veteran of the far right who was well known in such circles for his satirical columns that appeared in a number of publications down the years. Biography Rivalled only by John Graeme Wood in terms of his longevity on the British far right, Budden began his career as a low level member of the British Union of Fascists. Budden did not come to prominence, however, until the 1960s when, after a period of involvement in a number of local groups, he became a leading member of the Racial Preservation Society, whilst also taking a senior role in the John Bean's British National Party (not to be confused with the current party of the same name). Bean credits Budden, who was closely linked to the publishers Alan and Anthony Hancock, with playing a leading role in negotiating a merger between the two groups and the League of Empire Loyalists that led to the foundation of the National Front. Screaming Lord Sutch
Screaming Lord Sutch (10 November 1940 – 16 June 1999), who had his name legally changed from David Edward Sutch, was an English musician and perennial parliamentary candidate. He was the founder of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party and served as its leader from 1983 to 1999, during which time he stood in numerous parliamentary elections. He holds the record for contesting the most Parliamentary elections, standing in 39 elections from 1963 to 1997. As a singer, he variously worked with Keith Moon, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Charlie Watts, John Bonham and Nicky Hopkins, and is known for his recordings with Joe Meek including "Jack the Ripper" (1963). Patrick Antony Harrington (born 24 May 1964) is a far-right British political activist and writer of Irish Catholic family origins, who has published pamphlets by the Social Credit advocate and former editor of the ''Liverpool Newsletter'', Anthony Cooney, about prominent Catholic writers such as G.K. Official National Front
The Official National Front (ONF) was one of two far-right groups to emerge in the United Kingdom in 1986 following a split within the National Front. Following ideological paths that were mostly new to the British far-right, the ONF stood opposed to the more traditionalist Flag Group. Development The ONF emerged in the early 1980s when young radicals such as Nick Griffin, Derek Holland, Patrick Harrington and David Kerr became attracted to Third Position ideas and, eschewing the route of electoral politics favoured by the National Front up to that point, hoped to develop a cadre of devoted nationalist revolutionaries. National Front (UK)
The National Front (NF) is a far-right, fascist political party in the United Kingdom. It is currently led by Tony Martin. As a minor party, it has never had its representatives elected to the British or European Parliaments, although it gained a small number of local councillors through defections and it has had a few of its representatives elected to community councils.
