Mike Hooper (baseball)
Michael "Mike" H. Hooper (February 7, 1850 – December 1, 1917) was an American professional baseball player who played in three games for the Baltimore Marylands during the baseball season, his only playing time at the major league level. Previously he was an outfielder for the Maryland club at least 1868 to 1870, when he led the team in runs scored all three seasons. Maryland was one of the pioneer pro clubs when the National Association first permitted professional members in 1869. Outfielder
An outfielder is a person playing in one of the three defensive positions in baseball or softball, farthest from the batter. These defenders are the left fielder, the center fielder, and the right fielder. As an outfielder, their duty is to catch fly balls and ground balls then to return them to the infield for the out or before the runner advances, if there are any runners on the bases. As an outfielder, they normally play behind the six players located in the field. By convention, each of the nine defensive positions in baseball is numbered. The outfield positions are 7 (left field), 8 (center field) and 9 (right field). These numbers are shorthand designations useful in baseball scorekeeping and are not necessarily the same as the squad numbers worn on player uniforms. NABBP
The National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP) was the first organization governing American baseball. (The sport was spelled with two words in the 19th century.) The first convention of sixteen New York City area clubs in 1857 effectively terminated the Knickerbocker era, during which the rules of the game were largely at the discretion of individual clubs. Besides governing the playing rules and its own organization, the Association established standards for official scoring (reporting), "match" play, a championship, amateurism, and the integrity of the contest (then known as hippodroming). Baltimore Marylands (NABBP) Players
The Baltimore Marylands were a short-lived professional baseball team that existed in the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players, National Association season. Their existence consisted of a six games from April 14 to July 11, and finished with a Winning percentage, win–loss record of 0–6. In those six games, two of which were against the Washington Blue Legs and four versus the Baltimore Canaries, the team allowed 152 run (baseball), runs to score, while scoring 26 for themselves. The team was manager (baseball), managed by Bill Smith (baseball manager), Bill Smith, who also played in the outfielder, outfield and at catcher. They played their one and only home game on April 14, at Madison Avenue Grounds, and officially folded after the July 11, 1873 game.
