Mid-Prairie Community School District
The Mid-Prairie Community School District is a rural public school district in southeastern Iowa, headquartered in Wellman, Iowa. The district spans areas of Washington, Iowa, and Johnson counties, and serves three communities and the surrounding area: Wellman, Kalona, and West Chester. Schools Mid-Prairie High School Mid-Prairie High School (MPHS) is located at 1634 Hwy 22, one mile east of Wellman, Iowa, approximately 18 miles south of Iowa City and 15 miles north of Washington. MPHS is a grades 9–12 high school with approximately 380 students. The school colors are black and gold and the athletic teams are known as the Golden Hawks, and they compete in the River Valley Conference. Wellman, Iowa
Wellman is a city in Washington County, Iowa, United States. It is part of the Iowa City, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,524 at the time of the 2020 census. History Wellman is named for Joseph Edward Wellman, who in July, 1879, provided of his farmland for railroad construction including lots for development near the depot. Mr. Wellman was born in Lawrence County, Kentucky on 12 May 1824, acquired his farm in 1859, and died in Wellman on 14 January 1901. Original European settlement of the area occurred in 1839 on the north side of the English River north of Wellman. A gristmill began operation in 1842, and the community of Wassonville was surveyed and platted in 1848. The Wassonville ferry served a major territorial road from Iowa City to Oskaloosa and the western frontier. A roadhouse had been constructed by 1850 and population grew to 300. The state government passed the Consolidated School of Law of 1906 and this figure fell to 4,863 in 1908, 4,839 in 1922,. and 4,558 in 1953. The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) is the regulating body for male Iowa high school interscholastic athletics and is a full member of the National Federation of State High School Associations. Its female counterpart, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, (IGHSAU) is an associate member. Iowa is the only state that maintains separate governing bodies for boys' and girls' athletics. Kalona is a city in Washington County, Iowa. It is part of the Iowa City metropolitan area. The population was 2,630 at the time of the 2020 census. Kalona is the second-largest city in Washington County. History Amish settlement in what is now the Kalona area began in the 1840s, placing the Amish among the first European settlers in the area. The split between Old Order Amish and Amish Mennonites occurred in the 1860s in most places, but it was not until the 1880s that the formal split occurred in Iowa, even though a process of sorting out between conservatives and change-minded Amish had begun a decade earlier or so in Iowa.
