Michael Benedicks
Michael Benedicks, born 1949, is a Professor of Mathematics at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden. He received his Ph.D. from the Royal Institute of Technology in 1980. His doctoral advisor was Professor Harold S. Shapiro. He was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in the summer of 1989. He became a Professor of Mathematics at the Royal Institute of Technology in 1991. His research interests include dynamic systems. For example, he has studied Hénon maps together with Professor Lennart Carleson. The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), located in Princeton, New Jersey, in the United States, is an independent center for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry. It has served as the academic home of internationally preeminent scholars, including J. In mathematics, a dynamical system is a system in which a function describes the time dependence of a point in an ambient space. Examples include the mathematical models that describe the swinging of a clock pendulum, the flow of water in a pipe, the random motion of particles in the air, and the number of fish each springtime in a lake. The most general definition unifies several concepts in mathematics such as ordinary differential equations and ergodic theory by allowing different choices of the space and how time is measured. Lennart Axel Edvard Carleson (born 18 March 1928) is a Swedish mathematician, known as a leader in the field of harmonic analysis. One of his most noted accomplishments is his proof of Lusin's conjecture. He was awarded the Abel Prize in 2006 for "his profound and seminal contributions to harmonic analysis and the theory of smooth dynamical systems."
