Mercury Stakes
The Mercury Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Ireland open to thoroughbreds aged two years or older. It is run at Dundalk over a distance of 5 furlongs (1,006 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in October. The race was first run in 2008. It was previously run a Listed race before being upgraded to Group 3 status in 2018. The 2020 race was run in memory of Pat Smullen, an Irish champion jockey who rode his first and last winners at Dundalk, who died in September 2020. Group races, also known as Pattern races, or Graded races in some jurisdictions, are the highest level of races in Thoroughbred horse racing. They include most of the world's iconic races, such as, in Europe, the Derby, Irish Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, in Australia, the Melbourne Cup and in the United States, the Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup races. Thomas Geoffrey Dascombe (born 30 April 1973) is an English Group 1 winning racehorse trainer currently operating from Uplands Stables, Lambourn, United Kingdom. He trained Classic Blade and Firth of Fifth to win the G2 July Stakes and G2 Superlative Stakes respectively, on consecutive days in 2008 at Newmarket. Chris Hayes (born 11 August 1987) in County Limerick is an Irish jockey who competes in Flat racing. Hayes began his career riding in pony racing and went to the RACE training school. He joined the stable of Kevin Prendergast as an apprentice jockey in 2004 and was Irish champion apprentice in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Fran Berry
Francis Martin Berry (born 2 January 1981) in County Kildare is an Irish jockey who competed principally in Flat racing. Berry's father, Frank Berry, was Irish jump racing champion jockey ten times, and saddled Fran's first winner on Mayasta at Sligo Racecourse in April 1997. Berry began his career as a National Hunt jockey, winning the Coral Cup at Cheltenham in 1999 but went on to concentrate on Flat racing. He was employed as second jockey at John Oxx's stable from 2002 to 2009 and took over as leading jockey for Oxx in 2010. From 2011 onwards he rode for Jessica Harrington and John Kiely. In 2016, he moved to Britain to become stable jockey for Ralph Beckett, an association which lasted until Berry left ‘by mutual consent’ when he was relieved of the role in June 2017. Stevie Donohoe (born 28 February 1984) is an Irish jockey who competes in flat racing. He British Champion Apprentice in 2006. The Athlone man won the title with 44 winners in 2006 and finished four ahead of his main challengers. He sealed the prestigious award with victory on a 14/1 shot, ''Show Trial'', at Musselburgh Racecourse in Scotland. Donohoe established himself as one of Ireland's most promising jockeys and by winning the Lester Award for ''Apprentice Jockey of the Year'', he followed in the footsteps of the likes of Seb Sanders and Ryan Moore.
