''Mend'' is the debut album by the Scottish band De Rosa. Released in June 2006, it was voted 16th in Mojo’s top 50 albums of 2006. It was recorded by Scottish producer Andy Miller. De Rosa (band)
De Rosa are a Scottish rock band from Bellshill. It consists of Martin Henry (vocals, guitar), Chris Connick (guitar), James Woodside (bass), Neil Woodside (drums) and Andrew Bush (piano/keyboards). The band have released three studio albums—'' Mend'', ''Prevention'', and ''Weem''. Music De Rosa are noted for their use of guitar-based indie rock combined with Henry's personal lyrics sung in a Scottish accent. When asked about the importance of place in his lyrics, founding member and songwriter Martin Henry stated: "I guess in some small way I’m trying to give post-industrial Lanarkshire a place in culture." Although heavily influenced by the alternative rock music of the 1980s and 1990s, De Rosa's sound also references other subgenres of music, with elements of slowcore, Scottish folk and electronic music. Psychedelic Folk
Psychedelic folk (sometimes acid folk or freak folk) is a loosely defined form of psychedelia that originated in the 1960s. It retains the largely acoustic instrumentation of folk, but adds musical elements common to psychedelic music. Characteristics Psychedelic folk generally favors acoustic instrumentation although it often incorporates other instrumentation. Chanting, early music and various non-Western folk music influences are often found in psych folk. Much like its rock counterpart, psychedelic folk is often known for a peculiar, trance-like, and atmospheric sound, often drawing on musical improvisation and Asian influences. Chemikal Underground
Chemikal Underground is an independent record label set up in 1994 at Glasgow, Scotland by rock band The Delgados. It was set up to release their first single, "Monica Webster" / "Brand New Car" and went on to break many new Scottish bands in the nineties. When the second Chemikal Underground release by Bis, ''The Secret Vampire Soundtrack EP'' was successful, earning them a slot on ''Top of the Pops'', the label was able to expand. To date, ''The Secret Vampire Soundtrack'' is the only Top 40 hit released on Chemikal Underground. Further success followed with the debut albums by Mogwai and Arab Strap. Other bands on the Chemikal Underground roster included Magoo, Aereogramme, Cha Cha Cohen, Sluts of Trust, Suckle, the Radar Brothers and more recently Mother and the Addicts and De Rosa, as well as Arab Strap member Malcolm Middleton's solo work. Andy Miller (record Producer)
Andy Miller is a Scottish record producer based in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Miller is noted for his production on albums by Mogwai, Life Without Buildings, Arab Strap, The Delgados, Scout Niblett, Songs: Ohia, Sons And Daughters, De Rosa and Desert Hearts. He is freelance, he now works at Gargleblast Studio in Hamilton, but has mainly worked at Chem19 studios over the last ten years. Having recorded many early tracks by seminal Scottish post-rock band Mogwai in the mid-1990s, he has now recorded their album ''The Hawk Is Howling'', which was released in September 2008. In 2003, Miller co-founded the Lanarkshire-based independent record label, Gargleblast Records. Founded by Miller and friend Shaun Tallamy in May that year, the aim of the label was to support, develop and release music by some of the bands Miller had recorded at Chem Nineteen Studios. Prevention (album)
''Prevention'' is the second studio album by Scottish indie rock band De Rosa, released on 2 March 2009 on both Chemikal Underground and Gargleblast Records. Regarding the album, guitarist Chris Connick stated that the album features "ten tracks of misery and place, from Lanarkshire," and noted that it "differ dsonically from '' Mend'' quite a bit. The songs are more layered, and we used a lot more electronics and beats on this album. There’s also more emphasis on the album's coherence as a whole, and I think it plays better as a collection of songs than ''Mend'' did." Vocalist and guitarist Martin Henry stated that: "the scratchy, falling-apart sound of parts of ''Mend'' frustrates me sometimes, so with ''Prevention'' I wanted to make something that was prettier and heavier at the same time.
