A podium (plural podiums or podia) is a platform used to raise something to a short distance above its surroundings. It derives from the Greek ''πόδι'' (foot). In architecture a building can rest on a large podium. Podiums can also be used to raise people, for instance the conductor of an orchestra stands on a podium as do many public speakers. Common parlance has shown an increasing use of ''podium'' in North American English to describe a lectern. In sports, a type of podium can be used to honor the top three competitors in events. In the modern Olympics a tri-level podium is used. Traditionally, the highest platform is in the center for the gold medalist. To their right is a lower platform for the silver medalist, and to the left of the gold medalist is a lower platform for the bronze medalist. Kamil Anvarovich Ibragimov (russian: Камиль Анварович Ибрагимов; born 13 August 1993) is a Russian right-handed sabre fencer, two-time team European champion, and two-time team world champion. Personal life Ibragimov is the son of foil fencers Anvar Ibragimov and Olga Velichko and is of Tatar and Russian origin. He began fencing at the age of seven under the guidance of 1992 Olympic champion Aleksandr Shirshov, who remains his personal coach. Career Ibragimov is a Russian Armed Forces athlete, and his clubs are the Russian Central Sports Army Club and MGFSO. Amongst seniors, he made his breakthrough during the 2012–13 season, when he climbed his first World Cup podium with a gold medal in the Glaive d'Asparoukh after defeating Romania's Tiberiu Dolniceanu in the final. Nikolay Anatolyevich Kovalev (russian: Николай Анатольевич Ковалёв; born 28 October 1986) is a Russian sabre fencer. He won a bronze medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and a gold medal in the 2014 World Championships in Kazan. He is three-times World team champion (2010, 2011 and 2013) and twice European team champion (2007 and 2012). He is now a coach in California in the United States. Career Kovalev became European Junior champion in 2002 at Conegliano. Veniamin Sergeyevich Reshetnikov (russian: Вениамин Сергеевич Решетников; born 28 July 1986) is a Russian left-handed sabre fencer. Reshetnikov is a two-time team European champion, two-time individual European champion, three-time team world champion, and 2013 individual world champion. Reshetnikov competed in the 2012 London Olympic Games, where he finished 17th in the individual men's sabre event. Alin Badea (born 1 June 1988) is a Romanian sabre fencer, who won the team silver medal in the 2013 World championships. Biography Badea began fencing at age 10 at his local club, CS Slobozia, under coach Marin Mihăiță. In 2008 he transferred to CSA Steaua in Bucharest. Badea joined Romania's national team after the 2012 Summer Olympics and the retirement of three team members. With Tiberiu Dolniceanu as captain, Romania won a bronze medal in Madrid, their first World Cup tournament with the new team. For his first participation in World Championships, Badea made it to the table of 16, defeating world champion Aleksey Yakimenko along the way, before being stopped by Hungary's András Szatmári. Tiberiu Dolniceanu (; born 3 April 1988) is a Romanian sabre fencer, European champion in 2013 and bronze medal in the 2013 World championships. As part of Romania's sabre team, he won the team silver medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics and the team gold medal in the 2009 World Championships in Antalya. Ciprian Gălățanu (born 27 November 1989) is a Romanian sabre fencer, team silver medallist in the 2013 World Fencing Championships. Career Gălățanu took up fencing at CSM Iași under the coaching of Iulian Bițucă. He joined the national team after the 2012 Summer Olympics, when three of its four members retired from sport. Iulian Teodosiu (born 30 September 1994) is a Romanian sabre fencer, winning a team silver medal in the 2013 World Fencing Championships. Career Teodosiu took up fencing at the age of 9 after coaches from his local club, CSS Slobozia, came at his school to do a presentation. He describes this first contact as “love at first sight”. Teodosiu practiced sabre along with future teammate Alin Badea under coaches Marin Mihăiță and Marius Pușcașu. Teodosiu joined the national team at the age of 18, after the 2012 Summer Olympics, when three of its four members retired from sport. His first competition with the team was the Madrid World Cup, where Romania earned a bronze medal. Gu Bon-gil ( or ; born 27 April 1989) is a South Korean right-handed sabre fencer. Gu is an eight-time team Asian champion, seven-time individual Asian champion, and three-time team world champion. A three-time Olympian, Gu is a two-time team Olympic champion. Early life A native of Daegu, Gu had played football all through elementary and middle school and went on to Osung High School, which was the alma mater of his 2012 Olympics teammate Oh Eun-seok. The fencing coach at Osung High School had already noticed him in middle school and persuaded him to switch sports. He majored in physical education at Dong-Eui University, then one of the few universities which had a fencing team.
