Members Of The Western Australian Legislative Council, 1946–1948
This is a list of members of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 22 May 1946 to 21 May 1948. The chamber had 30 seats made up of ten provinces each electing three members, on a system of rotation whereby one-third of the members would retire at each biennial election. Notes : On 24 October 1946, East Province Country MLC member Vernon Hamersley died. Country candidate and former party leader Charles Latham won the resulting by-election on 14 December 1946. At 42 years, 2 months and 19 days, Vernon Hamersley served the longest term ever as member of the Council. : On 25 November 1946, South Province Liberal MLC James Cornell died. Western Australian Legislative Council
The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council.. The 2005 changes continued to maintain the previous malapportionment in favour of rural regions. Legislation was passed in 2021 to abolish these regions and increase the size of the council to 37 seats, all of which will be elected by the state-at-large. Eric Heenan (politician)
Eric Heenan (29 April 1900 – 26 June 1998) was an Australian politician. He was born in Kanowna, Western Australia to Michael Joseph Heenan and Josephine Frances (McCarthy) and educated at CBC Wakefield Street Adelaide, South Australia, Articled to Neville Heenan in Northam Practiced Law in the Western Australian goldfields and Perth. Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1936 to 1968 . Married Joan McKenna, one child Eric Michael Heenan. Vernon Hamersley
Vernon Hamersley (1871–1946) was an Australian politician. He served the longest term ever as a Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council. Biography Early life Vernon Hamersley was born in Guildford, Western Australia. The son of Samuel Hamersley, he was a member of the prominent and well-connected Hamersley family. His grandfather was Edward Hamersley (Snr); among his uncles was Edward Hamersley (Jnr) and Maitland Brown; and he was related by blood or marriage to many prominent Western Australians including John Forrest and William Locke Brockman. He was educated at Guildford Grammar School, before continuing his studies in England at the Magdalen College School at Oxford, and the Downton Agricultural College at Salisbury. Career He returned to Western Australia in 1889, spending some time on the Eastern goldfields, before farming with his father at York until 1895. William Hall (Australian Politician)
William Reaper Hall (3 May 1902 – 1 May 1963) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who served as a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1938 until his death, representing North-East Province. Hall was born in Boulder, Western Australia. He attended state schools in Kalgoorlie and then began working as a miner. Hall later began working for the Kalgoorlie Tramways, and eventually became secretary of the Tramway Employees' Union. He was elected to the Kalgoorlie Road Board in 1933 and would serve until 1949, including as chairman from 1935. Hall entered parliament in 1938, defeating Catherine Reid Elliott, MBE, widow of the previous incumbent, Charles Elliott. Edmund Hall (Australian Politician)
Edmund Henry Hartley Hall (13 August 1878 – 28 July 1965) was an Australian politician who represented the Western Australian Legislative Council district of Central Province from 1928 until 1947, and the Legislative Assembly seat of Geraldton from 1947 until 1950. He was a member of the Country Party. Biography Born to Edward Hall, a labour, baker and contractor, and Ellen (née Craggs) in the port city of Geraldton, Western Australia, Hall was educated locally before gaining employment at the post office, where he worked in various locations over 20 years. By 1911, he was the postmaster at Laverton, and on 20 April 1916, he married Catherine Forster at St Andrew's Church, Subiaco, with whom he was to have one son and four daughters. On 5 August 1918, he enlisted and was appointed Second Lieutenant with the First Australian Imperial Force, on account of his 7 years' earlier service with the Rifles in Geraldton. Frank Gibson (politician)
Sir Frank Ernest Gibson (11 July 1878 – 31 December 1965) was an Australian politician. Born at Egerton, Victoria, to Irish-born policeman Alexander Gibson and Louisa Herring, he attended Grenville College and the School of Mines at Ballarat before moving to Western Australia as a qualified pharmacist, setting up a business in Leonora in 1909. He married Jean Rodger Dunkley on 10 August 1911 at Kalgoorlie. In 1914 he moved to Fremantle, of which he was mayor for twenty-nine years (1919–23, 1926–51). Gilbert Fraser
Gilbert Fraser (22 July 1894 – 1 November 1958) was an Australian politician, postmaster and World War II Telegraphist. He was a Labor Party member in the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1928 to 1958, representing West Province. He served as Chief Secretary and Minister for Local Government and Town Planning from 1953 to 1958, and was Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council from 1955 to 1958. Personal life Fraser was born on 22 July 1894 in Bunbury, Western Australia. His parents were Edmund Fraser, a contractor, and Ellen Maud Walsh. He was Catholic. His family moved to Victoria when he was young, and he was educated at Marist Brothers College, Bendigo. Fraser returned to Western Australia in 1910.
