Western Australian Legislative Council
The Western Australian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Western Australia, a state of Australia. It is regarded as a house of review for legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly, the lower house. The two Houses of Parliament sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Perth. Effective on 20 May 2005, for the election of members of the Legislative Council, the State was divided into 6 electoral regions by community of interest —3 metropolitan and 3 rural—each electing 6 members to the Legislative Council.. The 2005 changes continued to maintain the previous malapportionment in favour of rural regions. Legislation was passed in 2021 to abolish these regions and increase the size of the council to 37 seats, all of which will be elected by the state-at-large. George Potter (politician)
George Potter (28 November 1883 – 10 December 1945) was an Australian politician who was a Nationalist Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1922 to 1928, representing West Province. Potter was born in Glasgow, Scotland, to Ellen (née Thomson) and John Potter. He attended James Gillespie's High School and Heriot-Watt College, and then joined the British Army, serving in the Boer War. Potter emigrated to Western Australia in 1909, to farm wheat at Bruce Rock. He re-entered the military on the outbreak of the First World War, joining the Australian Imperial Force. In August 1915, while fighting in the Gallipoli Campaign, Potter was wounded in action. He was subsequently repatriated to Australia, and worked at a military hospital in Fremantle until his discharge in February 1917. After the war's end, Potter worked as a hospital secretary. Gordon Masters
Gordon Edgar Masters (born 30 August 1931) is a former Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1974 to 1989, representing West Province. He was a minister in the governments of Sir Charles Court and Ray O'Connor. Masters was born in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England, to Winnifred (née Batchelor) and Edgar John Masters. He attended Berkhamsted School and the Hertfordshire Agricultural College, and then farmed locally until 1962, when he emigrated to Australia. Living on the outskirts of Perth, Masters purchased a contracting business, and later diversified into beef farming. He served on the Kalamunda Shire Council from 1969 to 1973, including as president from 1971 to 1973. Masters entered parliament at the 1974 state election, winning his seat from the Country Party. Frederick Richard "Fred" White (6 February 1927 – 20 October 1973) was an Australian politician who served as a Country Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1967 until his death. White was born in Perth but was raised in the country, attending Northam Senior High School. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in February 1945, just after his 18th birthday, and served until the war ended later in the year. White worked as a tradesman for a period after the war, and then studied teaching at the University of Western Australia and Claremont Teachers College. Beginning in 1959, he worked as a science teacher at various high schools in the Perth metropolitan area. The National Party of Australia (WA) Inc, branded The Nationals WA, is a political party in Western Australia. It is affiliated with the National Party of Australia but maintains a separate structure and identity. Since the 2021 state election, the Nationals WA is the senior party in an opposition alliance with the WA Liberal Party in the WA Parliament. Prior to the election, the National Party was sitting in the crossbench and the Liberal Party was the sole opposition party. The election resulted in the National Party winning more seats than the Liberal Party and gaining official opposition status. The Liberal Party of Australia (Western Australian Division), branded as Liberal Western Australia, is the division of the Liberal Party of Australia in Western Australia. Founded in March 1949 as the Liberal and Country League of Western Australia (LCL), it simplified its name to the Liberal Party in 1968. There was a previous Western Australian division of the Liberal Party when the Liberal Party was formed in 1945, but it ceased to exist and merged into the LCL in May 1949. Charles Abbey
Charles Roy Abbey (24 November 1913 – 2 September 1982) was an Australian farmer and politician who served as a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1958 to 1977. Abbey was born in Fremantle to Clara Gertrude (née Berry) and Charles Thomas Abbey. His parents moved to Beverley (a Wheatbelt farming community) when he was a small child. Abbey worked as a shop assistant after leaving school and then turned to farming, leasing a property near the Dale River for five years before purchasing it outright. He was prominent in local agricultural circles and also served on the Beverley Road Board from 1953 to 1962. Abbey entered parliament at the 1958 Legislative Council election, defeating Norm Baxter of the Country Party in Central Province. Jerry Dolan
John "Jerry" Dolan (25 December 1901 – 26 December 1986) was an Australian rules footballer and coach in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) before becoming a politician. He played for as well as coached East Fremantle and was also a coach at East Perth. After leaving football, Dolan served as a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council. Dolan originally played in the Goldfields Football Association with Kalgoorlie City and was recruited to East Fremantle after two seasons. He was used mostly as a centre half forward in his time at East Fremantle and participated in their 1925, 1928, 1929 and 1931 premiership teams. Dolan also played in their 1930 and 1933 premiership sides, as captain-coach. He represented Western Australia at the 1924 Hobart Carnival and captain-coached his state in the 1933 Sydney Carnival. Ronald Thompson (Australian Politician)
Ronald Thompson (15 November 1917 – 16 May 2006) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who was a member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1959 to 1980. He served as a minister in the government of John Tonkin. Thompson was born in Fremantle to Margaret Alice (née Mewburn) and Samuel Thompson. He left school at the age of 14, and subsequently worked as a wool classer at the Fremantle Woolstores. He was later employed as a shopkeeper and waterside worker, and held various positions in the local branch of the Waterside Workers' Federation (WWF). Thompson entered parliament at a 1959 Legislative Council by-election for West Province, caused by the death of Gilbert Fraser. He transferred to the new South Metropolitan Province at the 1965 state election. Frederick Lavery
Frederick Richard Hugh Lavery (13 February 1898 – 12 January 1971) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1952 to 1971. Lavery was born in Coolgardie, Western Australia, to Mary (née de Landgrafft) and William Lavery. He began his schooling in Southern Cross, but later moved away from the country and attended Fremantle Boys' School. After leaving school, Lavery worked for periods as a contractor (at Ballidu), bus driver, and truck driver (for Commonwealth Oil Refineries). He joined the Road Transport Union in 1920, and served as treasurer for 14 years and on the executive for 24 years, and eventually becoming a life member. Lavery entered parliament at the 1952 Legislative Council election, replacing the retiring Edmund Gray in West Province. Evan Morris Davies (22 June 1892 – 10 April 1963) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1947 until his death, representing West Province. Davies was born in Melbourne to Ann Elmira (née Davis) and John Morris Davies. He moved to Western Australia as a small child, and after leaving school began working for Western Australian Government Railways. Davies enlisted in the Australian Army in August 1917, and served in France with the 16th Battalion. He was discharged in September 1919, and subsequently returned to the railways.
