Medical History (journal)
''Medical History'' is a peer-reviewed academic journal covering the history of medicine. It was established in 1957. The journal is edited by Sanjoy Bhattacharya and is published by Cambridge University Press. The journal is associated with the European Association for the History of Medicine and Health, the Asian Society for the History of Medicine, and the World Health Organization's Global Health Histories initiative. History ''Medical History'' was founded in 1957, published by William Dawson, and was the official journal of four medical societies; the Cambridge University History of Medicine Society, The Norwegian Society for the History of Medicine, The Scottish Society of the History of Medicine, and the Osler Club of London. Its first editor was William John Bishop, the then librarian of the Wellcome Historical Medical Library. Following Bishop's death in 1961, Noël Poynter became the journal's editor. Sanjoy Bhattacharya
Sanjoy Bhattacharya, FRAS, is an academic and historian, who is professor in the History of Medicine and Director of the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Global Health Histories, at the University of York. Career Bhattacharya completed his undergraduate studies at St. Stephen's College, Delhi, before earning a Master of Arts degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, and then a doctorate from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. He was appointed a Wellcome Trust research fellow at Sheffield Hallam University in 1997, and took up a research fellowship at the University of Oxford four years later; at the same time, he was appointed to a lectureship at University College London, and remained there until 2010, when he became Reader in the History of Medicine at the University of York, where has since been promoted to a professorship and appointed Director of the Centre for Global Health Histories and Director of the World Health Organisation Collabora ... William John Bishop
William John Bishop FLA (190327 July 1961) was a British librarian, the first editor of the journal ''Medical History'', and a prolific writer. With his friend Frederick Noël Lawrence Poynter, he wrote about John Symcotts, a medical attendant of Oliver Cromwell in ''A Seventeenth Century Doctor and his Patients: John Symcotts, 1592?–1662''. After completing his early education from Sir Walter St John's Grammar School for Boys, he became a librarian assistant at the London Library and then assistant librarian to Arnold Chaplin at the Royal College of Physicians. He subsequently read papers to the History of Medicine Section and later joined the library of the Royal Society of Medicine. In 1946 the Wellcome Historical Medical Library appointed him as their librarian. Five years after publishing the book on Symcotts, he became the first editor of the journal ''Medical History''. The Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at UCL (2000-2012) was a research and teaching centre within University College London dedicated to the history of medicine. Vivian Nutton
Vivian Nutton FBA (born 21 December 1943) is a British historian of medicine who serves as Emeritus Professor at the UCL Centre for the History of Medicine, University College London, and current President of the Centre for the Study of Medicine and the Body in the Renaissance (CSMBR). Nutton acquired his B.A. in Classics at the University of Cambridge in 1965 and subsequently taught there as a Fellow of Selwyn College (1967–77).''Selwyn College Calendar'', 1986/87 He received his Ph.D. in 1970. Edwin Sisterton Clarke
Edwin Sisterton Clarke FRCP (18 June 1919 – 11 April 1996) was a British neurologist and medical historian, best remembered for his role as Director of the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine, when he succeeded Noël Poynter and oversaw the transfer of the Wellcome museum to the Science museum, helped establish an intercalated BSc degree in the history of medicine for medical students and edited the journal ''Medical History''. In 1958, Clarke left a career in neurology to pursue one in history of medicine. In 1965, he was a member of the founding committee that established the British Society for the History of Medicine. The British Society for the History of Medicine (BSHM) is an umbrella organisation of History of medicine societies throughout the United Kingdom, with particular representation to the International Society for the History of Medicine. It has grown from the original four affiliated societies in 1965; the Section for the History of Medicine, The Royal Society of Medicine, London, Osler Club of London, Faculty of the History of Medicine and Pharmacy and the Scottish Society of the History of Medicine, to twenty affiliated societies in 2018. Noël Poynter
Frederick Noël Lawrence Poynter FLA (24 December 1908 – 11 March 1979) was a British librarian and medical historian who served as director of the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine from 1964 to 1973. In 1958, Poynter was a key player in founding the Faculty of the History of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Society of Apothecaries and subsequently in 1965, he was one of the founding committee members who established the British Society for the History of Medicine (BSHM). He became its president in 1972 and also became secretary-general of the Société Internationale d’Histoire de la Médecine, later becoming its president too. Osler Club Of London
The Osler Club of London is a society founded in 1928 to encourage the study of the history of medicine, particularly amongst medical students, and to keep "green the memory of Sir William Osler". Membership in the club is open to medical men and women, medical students, and persons associated with the history of medicine and in allied sciences. Origins The Club was founded by a group of British gentlemen, considered part of a medical elite and pursuing the same ideals. They were following the "Oslerian legacy" which was reflected in their activities. Osler was the "ideal British gentleman" who showed concern, commitment, and loyalty to both patients and colleagues.
