"Me and the Sky" is a song from the musical ''Come from Away'' that focuses on the journey of Beverley Bass, a female pilot who was ordered to land in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, during the September 11 attacks. History A decade after the September 11 attack, Bass attended the Gander commemoration ceremony. At the ceremony, she was approached by two songwriters, Irene Sankoff and David Hein, who wanted to interview her. In order to make the musical ''Come from Away'', they asked Bass about her journey in becoming the first female captain for American Airlines. During this 4 hour interview, the writers gathered her stories that later helped to shape the musical; some of her statements later became the lyrics to "Me and the Sky". Jenn Colella (born Jennifer Lin Colella) is an American actress and singer. She began her career as a comedian and then branched out into musical theater. In her New York debut in ''Urban Cowboy'', she earned a 2003 Outer Critics Circle Award nomination. Irene Sankoff
__NOTOC__ Irene Sankoff is a Canadian librettist and composer–lyricist, best known for co-writing the Broadway musical ''Come from Away'' with her writing partner and husband, David Hein. Biography Sankoff was born in North York, Ontario, and double-majored in psychology and creative writing at York University, where she met Hein. After graduating, the couple moved to New York City in 1999 where he worked at a music studio and she studied at the Actors Studio and performed in theatres. They were in New York City during the September 11 attacks. After spending several years studying and working in New York the couple returned to Toronto where Hein wrote a song, "My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding", about his mother and her later life partner. David Hein

Come From Away
''Come from Away'' is a Canadian musical, with book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein. It is based on the events in the Newfoundland town of Gander during the week following the September 11 attacks, when 38 planes, carrying approximately 7,000 passengers, were ordered to land unexpectedly at Gander International Airport. The characters in the musical are based on (and in most cases share the names of) actual Gander residents and stranded travellers they housed and fed. The musical has been received by audiences and critics as a cathartic reminder of the capacity for human kindness in even the darkest of times and the triumph of humanity over hate. Beverley Bass
Beverley Bass (born March 27, 1952) is an American aircraft pilot and was the first female captain of an American Airlines commercial plane. She was hired in 1976 by American Airlines as their third female pilot. In 1986, Bass became the first female captain of a commercial plane at American Airlines and later that year she captained the first all-female crew in the history of commercial jet aviation, on an American Airlines flight from Washington D.C. to Dallas, Texas. She and pilot Stephanie Wallach founded the International Society of Women Airline Pilots, which began as a group of women aviators but later changed into a program providing career support and mentorship to aspiring pilots. Gander, Newfoundland And Labrador
