The city of Lower Hutt, New Zealand, was first proclaimed a borough on 1 February 1891. Prior to this it had been part of Hutt County, initially as a Roads Board and from 1881 as a Town Board. Alexander Fowler Roberts
Sir Alexander Fowler Roberts (1882 – 19 March 1961) was a New Zealand businessman, soldier and politician. Biography Roberts was born in Dunedin in 1882. He was educated at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh and Clare College, Cambridge. In 1903 he gained employment with Murray Roberts & Co, a stock and station agency. During World War I he was stationed in Wellington as a staff embarkation officer with the rank of Lieutenant colonel. He was awarded an Order of the British Empire in the 1918 New Year Honours and soon after as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for valuable services rendered in connection with the War in the 1919 Birthday Honours. In 1924 he was designated New Zealand commissioner to the British Empire Exhibition held at Wembley Park in London. Ray Wallace (mayor)
William Raymond Wallace (born 1961) is a New Zealand politician. He served as mayor of Lower Hutt from 2010 to 2019. Biography Early life Wallace was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, in 1961. He received his education at Te Aro Primary, St Mark's Church School and Wellington College. He has worked in real estate, health care, and the security industry. Wallace is married and lives in Wainuiomata. Political career Wallace stood for the National Party in the seat of Pencarrow (which covered much of Lower Hutt) at the 1990 general election. David Ogden (politician)
David Kevin Ogden (born 1944) is a former mayor of Lower Hutt in the Wellington region of New Zealand. Biography Ogden was born in Newtown, Wellington, in 1944. He grew up in Miramar and attended Miramar North School and later Wellington High School where he was a prefect. After briefly considering architecture he studied accountancy at Victoria University. He did not graduate but became a chartered accountant working at Fletcher Construction. He later became head of finance at TV1. He is a justice of the peace. John Terris
John James Terris (born 19 June 1939) is a New Zealand politician, priest and broadcaster who represented the Labour Party in the New Zealand parliament. Biography Early life and career Terris was born in Wanganui in 1939 to Alexander Roderick Terris and his wife Rosa Maria (née Donovan) and attended New Plymouth Boys' High School. Terris also attended St John's Theological College and attained a diploma. In 1970 he was ordained by the Anglican Church as a Worker Priest. Wellington Regional Council, branded as Greater Wellington Regional Council, is the regional council overseeing the Wellington Region of New Zealand's lower North Island. It is responsible for public transport under the brand Metlink, environmental and flood protection, and the region's water supply. Thomas Glendwr Gardner "Glen" Evans (22 April 1936 – 24 August 2016) was a New Zealand politician. He served as the mayor of Lower Hutt from 1986 to 1995. Biography Early life and family Born in Bedford, Bedfordshire, England, on 22 April 1936, Evans was the son of New Zealand parents. In the wake of the Great Depression his father, an engineer, had gone to England to find work, and later served in the Colonial Service in Ceylon. Evans was educated at Palmerston North Boys' High School, and went on to study at the University of Otago and Victoria University College, graduating BA, LLB from the latter institution in 1962. Sir John Kennedy-Good (8 August 1915 – 11 July 2005) was a New Zealand politician. He was mayor of Lower Hutt from 1970 to 1986. Biography Early life and career Kennedy-Good was born in 1915 in Goulburn, New South Wales, where his father was working as a stock and station agent. The family later moved to Invercargill, New Zealand, where they ran a butcher's shop. Kennedy-Good was educated at Southland Boys' High School and graduated from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1940. In 1940, he opened a dental practice in Lower Hutt and married June Clement Mackay, with whom he would have seven children. Percy Dowse (4 December 1898 – 9 December 1970) was a New Zealand politician. He was mayor of Lower Hutt from 1950 to 1970. Biography Early life He was born in Lancashire in 1898 and was educated at Wigan Technical College. His coal miner father James was killed in a mining accident when he was eight and his mother with three children got compensation of only £140; Percy thought that "things didn’t seem to be quite adding up" with that money his mother bought a small grocery shop down the road. William Cooper Gregory (1895 – 23 October 1970) was a New Zealand politician who was the Mayor of Lower Hutt from 1949 to 1950. Biography He was born in County Wicklow, Ireland and served three years in France during World War I. After the war he emigrated to New Zealand where he had several vocations after arriving in farming, the timber trade and auctioneering. He later became the director of a building and farming supplies company before being employed as the managing director of Montgomery's Furnishings Store in Levin. Ernst Peterson Hay (1886 – 13 December 1955) was a New Zealand lawyer and judge who was the Mayor of Lower Hutt from 1947 to 1949. Biography He was born in Lawrence in 1886 to William Hay. He was educated at Lawrence District High School and later became an assistant solicitor at the Public Trust Office in 1910. He was later a lawyer at the Wellington firm of Mazengarb, Hay and Macalister (founded 1918) with Ossie Mazengarb and Robert Macalister. He was also the President of the Wellington Rotary Club in 1939. During World War II Hay acted as chairman of the Armed Forces Appeal Board at Wellington. John William Andrews (8 May 1892 – 27 June 1983) was a New Zealand businessman and politician. He was Mayor of Lower Hutt from 1933 to 1947. Biography Andrews was born in Masterton, New Zealand, Masterton in 1892. He was educated at Masterton District High School before enlisting in the army during World War I. He was a captain in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade (Earl of Liverpool's Own), New Zealand Rifle Brigade and was wounded in action during the Battle of Messines (1917), Battle of Messines.
