Alexander Fowler Roberts
Sir Alexander Fowler Roberts (1882 – 19 March 1961) was a New Zealand businessman, soldier and politician. Biography Roberts was born in Dunedin in 1882. He was educated at Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh and Clare College, Cambridge. In 1903 he gained employment with Murray Roberts & Co, a stock and station agency. During World War I he was stationed in Wellington as a staff embarkation officer with the rank of Lieutenant colonel. He was awarded an Order of the British Empire in the 1918 New Year Honours and soon after as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for valuable services rendered in connection with the War in the 1919 Birthday Honours. In 1924 he was designated New Zealand commissioner to the British Empire Exhibition held at Wembley Park in London. After the exhibition he was conferred as a knight of the British Empire in 1926 for services in connection with the Wembley Exhibition. Reform Party (New Zealand)
The Reform Party, formally the New Zealand Political Reform League, was New Zealand's second major political party, having been founded as a conservative response to the original Liberal Party. It was in government between 1912 and 1928, and later formed a coalition with the United Party (a remnant of the Liberals), and then merged with United to form the modern National Party. Foundation The Liberal Party, founded by John Ballance and fortified by Richard Seddon, was highly dominant in New Zealand politics at the beginning of the 20th century. Ministry Of War Transport
The Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) was a department of the British Government formed early in the Second World War to control transportation policy and resources. It was formed by merging the Ministry of Shipping and the Ministry of Transport, bringing responsibility for both shipping and land transport to a single department, and easing problems of co-ordination of transport in wartime. The MoWT was founded on 1 May 1941, when Lord Leathers was appointed Minister of War Transport. Following the general election of July 1945, Alfred Barnes was appointed Minister of War Transport, remaining in the post after the department was renamed the Ministry of Transport in April 1946. Divisions The jurisdiction of the MoWT covered all forms of transportation and it inherited numerous and varied responsibilities from its parent organisations.
