Maurus Esteva Alsina
Maurus Esteva Alsina or Maur Esteva i Alsina, OCist 1933-2014 was the Abbot general of the Common observance between 1995–2010. Career He was born in Catalonia, Spain, and entered in 1958 to the community of the Royal Abbey of Santa Maria de Poblet, he studied in Rome. He was elected abbot in 1970, during end of the Franquisme and restoration of the Monarchy in Spain. During this period of 25 years the abbey flourished and was restored. In 1995 he succeeded Ferenc Polikárp Zakar as Abbot general of the Common observance. He was succeeded in 2010 by Mauro-Giuseppe Lepori. He died in the Royal abbey of Poblet. Cistercians
The Cistercians, () officially the Order of Cistercians ( la, (Sacer) Ordo Cisterciensis, abbreviated as OCist or SOCist), are a Catholic religious order of monks and nuns that branched off from the Benedictines and follow the Rule of Saint Benedict, as well as the contributions of the highly-influential Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, known as the Latin Rule. They are also known as Bernardines, after Saint Bernard himself, or as White Monks, in reference to the colour of the "cuculla" or cowl (choir robe) worn by the Cistercians over their habits, as opposed to the black cowl worn by Benedictines. Poblet Monastery
Poblet Abbey, otherwise the Royal Abbey of Santa Maria de Poblet ( ca, Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Poblet), is a Cistercian monastery, founded in 1151, located at the foot of the Prades Mountains, in the comarca of Conca de Barberà, in Catalonia (Spain). It was founded by Cistercian monks from France. The main architect was Arnau Bargués. This monastery was the first of three sister monasteries, known as the Cistercian triangle, that helped consolidate power in Catalonia in the 12th century. (The other two are Vallbona de les Monges and Sant Creus.) Significance Poblet was one of the two royal pantheons of the kings of the Crown of Aragon since James I of Aragon (along with Monastery of San Juan de la Peña). Abbot
Abbot is an ecclesiastical title given to the male head of a monastery in various Western religious traditions, including Christianity. The office may also be given as an honorary title to a clergyman who is not the head of a monastery. The female equivalent is abbess. Origins The title had its origin in the monasteries of Egypt and Syria, spread through the eastern Mediterranean, and soon became accepted generally in all languages as the designation of the head of a monastery. Ferenc Polikárp Zakar Ocist. (8 June 1930 – 17 September 2012) was a Hungarian abbot of the Cistercians of Common Observance. Between 1985-1995 he was in office as 80the General Abbot, and was succeeded by Maurus Esteva Alsina. Zakar was born in Zmajevo, Yugoslavia. He served as abbot of Zirc Abbey from 1996 to 2010. Mauro-Giuseppe Lepori, O.Cist., born 1959 is since 2010 the current General Abbot of the Cistercian order. He entered in 1984 Hauterive Abbey, became priest in 1990. He was between 1990 and 1994 novice master in this abbey. Anselm Van Der Linde
Anselm van der Linde O.Cist. (born 24 September 1970) is a Cistercian abbot of the common observance, an Austrian citizen born in South Africa. He was Abbot of the Territorial Abbey of Wettingen-Mehrerau from 2009 to 2018. Career Van der Linde was born in Roodepoort, South Africa, and studied at the University of Pretoria. In 1994 he took vows in the Territorial Abbey of Wettingen-Mehrerau. He became the 53rd abbot of this abbey in 2009, succeeding Kassian Lauterer, and is member of the Austrian Bishops' Conference. His election was approved by Pope Benedict the same year. Van der Linde was ordained and consecrated by Maurus Esteva Alsina. As abbot he was responsible for 21 Cistercian monasteries, both male and female, in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the United States, the Czech Republic and Slovenia.
