Mauro-Giuseppe Lepori, O.Cist., born 1959 is since 2010 the current General Abbot of the Cistercian order. He entered in 1984 Hauterive Abbey, became priest in 1990. He was between 1990 and 1994 novice master in this abbey. The Cistercians, () officially the Order of Cistercians ( la, (Sacer) Ordo Cisterciensis, abbreviated as OCist or SOCist), are a Catholic religious order of monks and nuns that branched off from the Benedictines and follow the Rule of Saint Benedict, as well as the contributions of the highly-influential Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, known as the Latin Rule. They are also known as Bernardines, after Saint Bernard himself, or as White Monks, in reference to the colour of the "cuculla" or cowl (choir robe) worn by the Cistercians over their habits, as opposed to the black cowl worn by Benedictines. Maurus Esteva Alsina or Maur Esteva i Alsina, OCist 1933-2014 was the Abbot general of the Common observance between 1995–2010. Career He was born in Catalonia, Spain, and entered in 1958 to the community of the Royal Abbey of Santa Maria de Poblet, he studied in Rome. He was elected abbot in 1970, during end of the Franquisme and restoration of the Monarchy in Spain. During this period of 25 years the abbey flourished and was restored. In 1995 he succeeded Ferenc Polikárp Zakar as Abbot general of the Common observance. He was succeeded in 2010 by Mauro-Giuseppe Lepori. He died in the Royal abbey of Poblet. Hauterive Abbey
Hauterive Abbey (french: Abbaye d’Hauterive) is a Cistercian abbey in the Swiss municipality of Hauterive in the canton of Fribourg. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance. The entire Hauterive area is part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites. History The land for the abbey was donated between 1132-1137 by Baron Guillaume de Glâne (died in 1143, his grave is in the church). After monks moved down from Cherlieu Abbey in northern Burgundy and inhabited the buildings, the Bishop of Lausanne granted permission to consecrate the abbey in 1137. It was then consecrated on 25 February 1138 as the ''sancte Abbatia Marie de Altaripa''. Pope Innocent II confirmed this consecration in 1142. With support from the local nobility and the Bishop of Lausanne, the abbey flourished both economically and culturally in the 12th and early 13th centuries.
