Maurice Dewayne Hooker (born August 7, 1989) is an American professional boxer who held the WBO light welterweight title from 2018 to 2019 and challenged for the WBC light welterweight title in 2019. As of August 2020, he is ranked as the world's sixth best active light welterweight by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board. Professional career Hooker vs. Flanagan Hooker turned professional in 2011 and compiled a record of 23-0-3 before challenging and beating British boxer Terry Flanagan in an upset on June 9, 2018 for the vacant WBO light welterweight title in Manchester England on the Tyson Fury vs. Sefer Seferi undercard. Light welterweight, also known as junior welterweight or super lightweight, is a weight class in combat sports. Boxing Professional boxing In professional boxing, light welterweight is contested between the lightweight and welterweight divisions, in which boxers weigh above 61.2kg or 135 pounds and up to 63.5 kg or 140 pounds. The first champion of this weight class was Pinky Mitchell in 1946, though he was only awarded his championship by a vote of the readers of the ''Boxing Blade'' magazine. There was not widespread acceptance of this new weight division in its early years, and the New York State Athletic Commission withdrew recognition of it in 1930. Alongside boxing he works full-time as a data specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
