Mathrin Simmers
Mathrin Simmers (born 3 March 1988) is a South African rugby sevens player. Rugby career Simmers competed for South Africa at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. She was selected again to represent South Africa at the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco. Simmers was named in South Africa's squad for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham where they finished in seventh place. She was later selected to represent South Africa at the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town. Rugby Sevens At The 2024 Summer Olympics – Women's Tournament
The rugby sevens tournaments at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris are scheduled to run from 24 to 30 July at Stade de France. Twenty-four teams (twelve each for men and women) will compete against each other in their respective tournaments. For the first time, the rugby sevens matches will commence two days before the opening ceremony with the men's preliminary and quarterfinal stages. The competition takes a break for the opening ceremony on 26 July before the medal-winning teams are officially unveiled a day later. The women's tournament will be held between 28 and 30 July, culminating with the gold and bronze medal matches. The 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens was the eighth edition of the Rugby World Cup Sevens organised by World Rugby. The 2022 tournament, comprising 24 men's and 16 women's teams as previously, was played over three days in one venue in September. It took place at the Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town, South Africa between 9 and 11 September 2022. It was the first ever Rugby World Cup Sevens in Africa. The dates were chosen to take into account in the Commonwealth Games tournament which took place in July the same year. Bidding A record 11 unions formally expressed interest in hosting Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022. The unions were issued formal bid application documents by World Rugby and had to submit their responses by 16 July 2019. South Africa Women's National Rugby Sevens Team
The South Africa women's national rugby sevens team competes at events within the World Rugby Women's Sevens Series and was a core team for 2014–15 season. They first played in the 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens, and also competed in the IRB Women's Sevens Challenge Cup in the 2011–12 season. South Africa did not qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics despite winning the 2015 Women's Africa Cup Sevens because the South African Olympic Committee (SASCOC) rules states that teams cannot qualify by winning continental titles. As in 2016, South Africa missed Tokyo 2020 for the same reason. 2022 Commonwealth Games
The 2022 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXII Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Birmingham 2022, was an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth of Nations that took place in Birmingham, England between 28 July and 8 August 2022. Birmingham was announced as host on 21 December 2017. The Games marked England's third time hosting the Commonwealth Games after London 1934 and Manchester 2002, and the 7th Games held in the United Kingdom, with previous events in Wales and Scotland: Cardiff 1958, Edinburgh 1970 and 1986 and Glasgow 2014.
