Mathias Ntawulikura
Mathias Ntawulikura (born 14 June 1964 in Gisovu/ Kibuye) is a retired Rwandan long-distance runner. He reached the World Athletics Championships final and participated in the Olympic Games in the 5000 metres (1988) and 10,000 metres (1992, 1996) and marathon (2000, 2004). He also participated five times in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. His best Olympic performance was 8th in the 10,000 m at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, a race where the top eight positions were taken by (six) African countries. He was forty when he competed in the marathon at the 2004 Athens Olympics; of the hundred men who started the race, he came 62nd with a time of 2hours, 26 minutes, 5 seconds. He is the first (and as of 2010, only) Rwandan to compete at five Olympic Games. The only African to compete in five Olympics before him was Egyptian shooter Mohamed Khorshed. 2001 World Championships In Athletics
The 8th World Championships in Athletics, under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations, were held at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada between 3 August and 12 August and was the first time the event had visited North America. The music for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies was composed by Canadian composers Jan Randall and Cassius Khan. The ceremonies also featured a 1000 voice choir, and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Edmonton defeated bids from Paris, France (which hosted the next edition) and the San Francisco Bay Area in the United States to host the event. The 2000 London Marathon was the 20th running of the annual marathon race in London, United Kingdom, which took place on Sunday, 16 April. The elite men's race was won by Portugal's António Pinto (runner), António Pinto in a time of 2:06:36 hours and the women's race was won by Kenya's Tegla Loroupe in 2:24:33. In the wheelchair races, Britain's Kevin Papworth (1:41:50) and Sarah Piercy (2:23:30) won the men's and women's divisions, respectively.
