Maryland Route 299
Maryland Route 299 (MD 299) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The highway runs from MD 313 and MD 330 at Massey in eastern Kent County north to U.S. Route 301 (US 301) near Warwick in far southern Cecil County. MD 299 was constructed from Massey to Sassafras around 1930 and from there to MD 282 in Warwick in the early 1930s. The highway between US 301 and MD 282 was transferred to county control in 1958. Route description MD 299 begins at a four-way intersection with MD 313 and MD 330 at the hamlet of Massey in eastern Kent County. MD 313 heads northbound to the west and southbound as Galena Road, and MD 330 heads eastbound as Maryland Line Road. MD 299 heads northbound as two-lane undivided Massey Road and immediately has a grade crossing of the Chestertown Branch of the Northern Line of the Maryland and Delaware Railroad just west of the junction of the Centreville and Chestertown branches of the Northern Line. Maryland And Delaware Railroad
The Maryland and Delaware Railroad Company is a Class III short-line railroad, formed in 1977 to operate several branch lines of the former Penn Central Railroad in both Maryland and Delaware, United States. These branches were omitted from the system plan for Conrail in 1976 and would have been discontinued without state subsidies. As an alternative to the higher cost of subsidizing Conrail as the operator of the branch lines, the Maryland and Delaware governments selected the Maryland and Delaware Railroad Company (MDDE) to serve as the designated operator. The railroad did not own any of the track it uses until 2000 when it acquired a line between Frankford, Delaware and Snow Hill, Maryland, from the Snow Hill Shippers Association. Maryland Route 290 (MD 290) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The highway runs from MD 300 at Dudley Corners north to MD 299 near Sassafras. MD 290 roughly parallels U.S. Route 301 (US 301), which it intersects twice, as it connects the communities of Crumpton in northern Queen Anne's County and Chesterville and Galena in eastern Kent County. The portion of the route in Queen Anne's County was constructed as MD 301 in the early to mid-1920s. In Kent County, a portion south of Galena was built in the late 1910s and extended south to the Chester River in the late 1920s.
