Mary Bethune Abbott
Mary Martha Berthune, Lady Abbott (October 17, 1823 – February 25, 1898) was the wife of Sir John Abbott, the third Prime Minister of Canada. Family Bethune was the daughter of Anglican clergyman and McGill acting president John Bethune. She and John Abbott married on July 26, 1849 and had four sons and four daughters. Mary and John Abbott are maternal great-grandparents of actor Christopher Plummer. John Abbott
Sir John Joseph Caldwell Abbott (March 12, 1821 – October 30, 1893) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the third prime minister of Canada from 1891 to 1892. He held office as the leader of the Conservative Party. Abbott was born in what is now Saint-André-d'Argenteuil, Quebec. He studied law at McGill University and became one of Montreal's best-known lawyers, later returning to McGill as a professor of law and earning a Doctor of Civil Law degree. He was perhaps best known for his successful defence of the perpetrators of the St. Albans Raid. Abbott involved himself in politics from a young age, signing the Montreal Annexation Manifesto in 1849which he later regrettedand winning election to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1860. John Bethune (principal)
John Wadden Bethune (5 January 1791 – 22 August 1872) was a Canadian Anglican cleric and the acting principal of McGill University from 1835 to 1846. Life and work Born in Williamstown, Glengarry County, Upper Canada, he was the son of the Reverend John Bethune and Véronique Waddin who was the daughter of Jean-Étienne Waddens (1738–1782), a founding partner in the North West Company and formerly a professor at the University of Bern and the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Bethune received his education at the school of the Reverend John Strachan in Cornwall, Ontario. After serving in the War of 1812, he entered the ministry of the Church of England and in 1814, he was ordained by Bishop Jacob Mountain in Quebec City. In 1818 he was made rector of Christ Church, Montreal, where he remained for more than 50 years, eventually becoming dean of the diocese.
