John Bethune (principal)
John Wadden Bethune (5 January 1791 – 22 August 1872) was a Canadian Anglican cleric and the acting principal of McGill University from 1835 to 1846. Life and work Born in Williamstown, Glengarry County, Upper Canada, he was the son of the Reverend John Bethune and Véronique Waddin who was the daughter of Jean-Étienne Waddens (1738–1782), a founding partner in the North West Company and formerly a professor at the University of Bern and the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Bethune received his education at the school of the Reverend John Strachan in Cornwall, Ontario. After serving in the War of 1812, he entered the ministry of the Church of England and in 1814, he was ordained by Bishop Jacob Mountain in Quebec City. Strachan Bethune
Strachan Bethune, (November 6, 1821 – March 8, 1910) twice Bâtonnier of Montreal and the 1st Anglican Chancellor of the Diocese of Montreal. Biography Born at Burnside Hall, Montreal, Strachan Bethune was the son of the Very Reverend John Bethune, Dean of Montreal and Principal of McGill University, by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of William Hallowell (1771–1838), signing partner of the North West Company. He was named for his father's mentor John Strachan, and he was a great-grandson of the explorer Alexander Henry the elder. Jacob Mountain
Jacob Mountain (1 December 1749 – 16 June 1825) was an English priest who was appointed the first Anglican Bishop of Quebec. He served also on both the Legislative Council of Lower Canada and the Legislative Council of Upper Canada. Biography The third son of Jacob Mountain (1710–1752), of Thwaite Hall, Norfolk, and his third wife, Ann, daughter of Jehoshaphat Postle of Colney Hall, near Wymondham, chairman of the Norfolk Agricultural Association. According to some sources Mountain was related to Michel de Montaigne via his great-grandfather, who also resided at Château de Montaigne, and whose family fled from France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. John Abbott
Sir John Joseph Caldwell Abbott (March 12, 1821 – October 30, 1893) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the third prime minister of Canada from 1891 to 1892. He held office as the leader of the Conservative Party. Abbott was born in what is now Saint-André-d'Argenteuil, Quebec. He studied law at McGill University and became one of Montreal's best-known lawyers, later returning to McGill as a professor of law and earning a Doctor of Civil Law degree. Donald Bethune
Donald Bethune (July 11, 1802 – June 19, 1869) was a lawyer, judge, entrepreneur and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Williamstown in Upper Canada in 1802, the son of Reverend John Bethune. Donald was part of a prominent family which included four brothers of note: Alexander Neil, became bishop of the diocese of Toronto, James Gray Bethune was a businessman, Angus Bethune was prominent in the fur trade and John Bethune was an Anglican clergyman and acting principal of McGill University. Angus Bethune (9 September 1783 – 13 November 1858) was the oldest son of the Reverend John Bethune. He had several distinguished brothers: Alexander Neil, who became Anglican bishop of Toronto; John, Anglican clergyman, dean of the diocese of Montreal and principal of McGill University; James Gray prominent Upper Canada businessman; Donald, an important political figure in Upper Canada. Alexander Neil Bethune (August 28, 1800 – February 3, 1879) was a Church of England clergyman and bishop. Edmund Allen Meredith
Edmund Allen Meredith (7 October 1817 – 2 January 1899) was an Irish lawyer whose career was in public service in Canada. He was Under Secretary of State for Canada; a prison reformer, writer, president of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec and the third principal of McGill University from 1846 to 1853.
