Austria took part at the Eurovision Song Contest 1993 in Millstreet, Ireland, represented by Tony Wegas with the song "Maria Magdalena". Before Eurovision Internal selection Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) selected Tony Wegas, who had represented Austria in 1992, to represent the country at the 1993 Contest in Ireland. National final A national final was held to select the competing song for Austria at Eurovision, with seven songs, all sung by Wegas, presented. In February 1993 the seven songs were played on the radio, with the public invited to vote for their favourite entry by postcard voting. On 30 March 1993, a television programme, held at the ORF TV studios in Vienna and hosted by Andreas Steppan and Michael Niavarani, was shown by ORF with pre-recorded videos of the seven entries, afterwards the results of the voting were announced. 15,245 postcards were received by ORF for the contest with the winning song, "Maria Magdalena", receiving 6,170 postcards in total. Tony Wegas
Anton Hans Sarközi as Tony Wegas (born 3 May 1965 in Oberschützen) is an Austrian singer and television actor. Biography Wegas participated in "Ein Lied für Rom", the Austrian heat of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1991 with the song "Wunder dieser Welt". The song was placed second but Wegas was invited to represent Austria in 1992. He performed "Zusammen geh'n" in Malmö and despite being one of the favourites to win, could only manage tenth place. Austrian television decided to give him another chance in 1993 and he performed all of the songs in the national selection contest, "Veni Vidi Wegas". The winning song, " Maria Magdalena" came a disappointing fourteenth in Millstreet. Millstreet () is a town in north County Cork, Ireland, with a population of 1,555 (as of 2016). Millstreet is within the civil parish of Drishane, and within a Poor Law Union also called Millstreet. The Millstreet Union encompasses the civil parishes of Drishane and Kilcorney. Geography The town is at the foot of Clara Mountain. The Eurovision Song Contest 1992 was the 37th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Malmö, Sweden, following the country's victory at the with the song "" by Carola. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster (SVT), the contest was held at the Malmö Isstadion on 9 May 1992 and was hosted by Swedish journalists Lydia Capolicchio and Harald Treutiger. Twenty-three countries took part in the contest with the returning after being absent the year before. This set another record for the most participating countries in the history of the competition, which would be broken again the following year. The 1992 contest also saw the last participation of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, as they were banned from competing only a few weeks later due to the Yugoslav Wars. Michael Niavarani (born April 29, 1968 in Vienna, Austria) is an Austrian-Persian stand-up comedian in the tradition of Austrian cabaret, an author, and a TV and movie actor. Niavarani, whose comedic work often draws on his inter-cultural upbringing, is a central figure of the Austrian cabaret scene.
