Maria Curie-Skłodowska University
Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (MCSU) ( pl, Uniwersytet Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie, UMCS) was founded October 23, 1944 in Lublin. It is named in honour of Marie Curie-Sklodowska. Currently the number of students is almost 36,000. The university has 302 professors (157 full professors), 231 habilitated doctors, 826 senior lecturers, and 1829 teachers in total. Total staff is 3628. To meet the growing demand for higher education, the university has established branches in other cities. Rankings In 2011 the Polish national daily newspaper ''Rzeczpospolita'' ranked the university 11th among Polish public universities (25). Lublin
Lublin is the ninth-largest city in Poland and the second-largest city of historical Lesser Poland. It is the capital and the center of Lublin Voivodeship with a population of 336,339 (December 2021). Lublin is the largest Polish city east of the Vistula River and is about to the southeast of Warsaw by road. One of the events that greatly contributed to the city's development was the Polish-Lithuanian Union of Krewo in 1385. Roman Szporluk
Roman Szporluk ( uk, Роман Шпорлюк, ''Schporlyuk''; born 8 September 1933) is a Ukrainian-American political scientist and historian. He is a professor emeritus at Harvard and the University of Michigan. He has written several books and many papers. He is the father of poet Larissa Szporluk and novelist Ben Vendetta. Biography Szporluk was born in Grzymałów ( Kopychyntsi county, Tarnopol voivodeship in Poland, now Hrymailiv in the Ternopil region, Ukraine) and studied in Lublin after World War II at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University graduating in 1955. He did post-graduate work for three years and then headed west in 1958 studying political thought at Oxford University in 1961 under Sir Isaiah Berlin and John Plamenatz and at Stanford. From 1965 until 1991, he worked at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor as a professor of history. The Marie Curie Monument in Lublin (Polish: ''Pomnik Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie w Lublinie'') is a bronze statue in Lublin, eastern Poland, dedicated to Polish physicist and chemist Marie Curie (1867–1934). History The bronze monument was designed by Polish sculptor Marian Konieczny (with Stanisław Ciechan) and ceremonially unveiled on 24 October 1964. It is 9 metres high (including pedestal) and stands on Marie Skłodowska-Curie Square (''Plac Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie''), near Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (''UMCS''). Marie Curie is depicted in a long robe and holding a book in her right hand.
