Mardi Tindal
Mardi Tindal (born 1952) was the 40th Moderator of the United Church of Canada from 2009–2012, only the fourth layperson to take the post since the church was formed in 1925. Early life and vocation Tindal was raised in the rural village of Victoria Square, Ontario, and earned an MA in psychology from the University of Toronto. Before her election, Tindal was already well known within the United Church of Canada as the co-host of a United Church television program, ''Spirit Connection''. David Giuliano
David W. Giuliano (born May 16, 1960) was the 39th Moderator of the United Church of Canada from 2006 to 2009. Early life and education Giuliano grew up in Windsor, Ontario, in his words, "a descendant of deeply faithful Southern Ontario Quakers, born-again Baptists, and Italian-American immigrant Catholics." While in attending high school in Windsor, Ontario, he met his future wife Pearl at a church youth group. Giuliano earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master's of Science from the University of Guelph and a Master of Divinity and a Master of Theology from Queen's University. He received an Honorary Doctorate from Huntington University, Sudbury. Vocation Following graduation, Giuliano moved to Marathon, Ontario to serve at St. John's United Church. He also worked for the University of Guelph as human rights commissioner, conference co-ordinator, and residence manager. Gary Paterson
Gary J. Paterson (born 1949) was the Moderator of the United Church of Canada from 2012 to 2015. He was the first openly gay person to take the post since the church was formed in 1925 and the first in the world to lead a major Christian denomination. Early life and education Paterson was born in Whitehorse, Yukon in 1949, and as an "army brat", lived in Toronto, Ontario and Germany before his family settled in Vancouver, British Columbia. He earned two degrees in English literature and became a sessional lecturer at University of British Columbia. Moderator Of The United Church Of Canada
The Moderator of the United Church of Canada is the most senior elected official within the United Church of Canada. He or she may be a lay person or a member of the Order of Ministry and is elected to a three-year term by commissioners attending the church's triannual General Council. The current Moderator is the Right Reverend Dr. Carmen Lansdowne, who was elected to the office at the 44th General Council in July 2022, and installed on August 7, 2022. Victoria Square, Ontario
Victoria Square is an unincorporated community in Markham, Ontario, Canada. The community was formed in the early nineteenth century. History Historic Victoria Square began at 4th Line (Victoria Square Boulevard) and 18th Line (Elgin Mills Road) in 1805 with mostly Mennonites from Pennsylvania beginning in 1803 and then by British and American settlers in the 1820s. The area was initially called Heise Hill for the Heise family whom were part of the first wave of settlers. The first church (Primitive Methodist) was built in 1830s on the east side of 4th Line, where the cemetery is still located. The Wesleyan Methodists built a wood-frame church south of the Victoria Square corner in 1845. This was replaced by a red brick edifice in 1880 at what was once William Frisby's old blacksmith shop. Iona
Iona (; gd, Ì Chaluim Chille (IPA: iːˈxaɫ̪ɯimˈçiʎə, sometimes simply ''Ì''; sco, Iona) is a small island in the Inner Hebrides, off the Ross of Mull on the western coast of Scotland. It is mainly known for Iona Abbey, though there are other buildings on the island. Iona Abbey was a centre of Gaelic monasticism for three centuries and is today known for its relative tranquility and natural environment. It is a tourist destination and a place for spiritual retreats. Its modern Scottish Gaelic name means "Iona of (Saint) Columba" (formerly anglicised as "Icolmkill"). In 2019, the island's estimated population was 120. Residents engage in farming, using traditional methods.
