Marchmont Herald
Marchmont Herald of Arms is a current Scottish herald of arms of the Court of the Lord Lyon (there are six herald titles but only three heralds at any one time) The office was first mentioned in 1438, and the title is derived from the royal castle of Marchmont, an older name for Roxburgh Castle in the Scottish Borders. The badge of office is ''A tower of three castellations Vert masoned Argent, the dexter castellation Azure charged of a saltire Argent the sinister castellation Argent charged of a cross Gules, all ensigned of the Crown of Scotland Proper.''. Herald
A herald, or a herald of arms, is an officer of arms, ranking between pursuivant and king of arms. The title is commonly applied more broadly to all officers of arms. Heralds were originally messengers sent by monarchs or noblemen to convey messages or proclamations—in this sense being the predecessors of modern diplomats. In the Hundred Years' War, French heralds challenged King Henry V to fight. During the Battle of Agincourt, the English herald and the French herald, Montjoie, watched the battle together from a nearby hill; both agreed that the English were the victors, and Montjoie provided King Henry V, who thus earned the right to name the battle, with the name of the nearby castle. Sir Malcolm Rognvald Innes of Edingight (25 May 1938 – 20 September 2020) was Lord Lyon King of Arms of Scotland from 1981 until 2001. Early life He was the son of Sir Thomas Innes of Learney (Lord Lyon from 1945 to 1969) and Lady Lucy Buchan, daughter of Norman Macleod Sinclair, 18th Earl of Caithness. Thomas Innes Of Learney
Sir Thomas Innes of Learney (1893–1971) was a Scottish officer of arms who was Lord Lyon from 1945 to 1969. He was Carrick Pursuivant and Albany Herald in the 1920s and 1930s. He was a very active Lord Lyon, strongly promoting his views of what his office was through his writings and pronouncements in his Court. In 1950, he convinced the Scots Law Times to start publishing the decisions made in Lyon Court. By ruling on uncontested petitions, he was able to expound many of his theories in court but not under review of his superior court, and get them published in the judicial record. His treatise, ''Scots Heraldry'', was first published in 1934 when he was Carrick Pursuivant; then a second, enlarged edition came out in 1956, and it has practically eclipsed earlier works on the subject. James Monteith Grant
Sir James Monteith Grant FRHSC (Hon) (19 October 1903 – 1 December 1981) was Lord Lyon King of Arms of Scotland from 1969 to 1981. Educated at the Edinburgh Academy and the University of Edinburgh, where he studied law, he was appointed a Writer to the Signet (WS) in 1927. His first heraldic appointment was as Carrick Pursuivant in 1946. He was promoted to Marchmont Herald in 1957 and then to Lord Lyon in 1969. He was also Secretary to the Order of the Thistle from 1971 until 1981. From his retirement as Lord Lyon in 1981, he again held the post of Marchmont Herald until his death later that year. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (FSA Scot), a Knight of the Venerable Order of St John (KStJ) from 1970, and a Commander 2nd Class of the Order of the Polar Star (KNO2kl) of Sweden from 1975. Lieutenant Colonel John William Balfour Paul (4 June 1873 – 23 April 1957) was a Scottish soldier and officer of arms in the Court of the Lord Lyon. He was the son of James Balfour Paul and brother of Arthur Forman Balfour Paul, and educated at Sedbergh School. He was Falkland Pursuivant Extraordinary from 1927 to 1939, and Marchmont Herald from 1939 to 1957. In 1951 he was appointed a Vice-Lieutenant of Midlothian.
