Magal ( he, מַגָּל, ''lit.'' Sickle) is a kibbutz in Israel. Located in the Wadi Ara region of the northern Sharon plain near the Green Line, it falls under the jurisdiction of Menashe Regional Council. In it had a population of . The kibbutz was named after the sickle on the Nahal's badge. History Kibbutz Magal was founded in 1953 as a Nahal settlement on a hill overlooking the Samaria hills and what was then the border with Jordan. The kibbutz sits on a hill known from the War of Independence as the "86th Regiment"—on any elevation of the hill above the sea level (86 meters). The kibbutz was founded by the Tzofim battalion, but when they left, Nahal members began to settle there, which continued to reach it until the 1980s. Nahal ( he, נח"ל) (acronym of ''Noar Halutzi Lohem'', lit. Fighting Pioneer Youth) is a program that combines military service with mostly social welfare and informal education projects such as youth movement activities, as well as training in entrepreneurship in urban development areas. Prior to the 1990s it was a paramilitary Israel Defense Forces program that combined military service and the establishment of agricultural settlements, often in peripheral areas. The Nahal groups of soldiers formed the core of the Nahal Infantry Brigade. The Kibbutz Movement ( he, התנועה הקיבוצית, ''HaTnu'a HaKibbutzit'') is the largest settlement movement for kibbutzim in Israel. It was formed in 1999 by a partial merger of the United Kibbutz Movement and Kibbutz Artzi and is made up of approximately 230 kibbutzim. Wadi Ara ( ar, وادي عارة, he, ואדי עארה) or Nahal 'Iron ( he, נחל עירון), is a valley and its surrounding area in Israel populated mainly by Arab Israelis.
