Maeshafn
Maeshafn is a small village in Denbighshire, Wales, near the border with Flintshire. Maeshafn lies several miles to the southwest of Mold. Overlooked by Moel Findeg hill, the River Alyn flows to the west, and Loggerheads Country Park is towards the north towards the A494 road. History Historically Maeshafn was a lead mining village called Maes y safn. The East Maes-y-Safn Lead Mining Company operated in the area. A 1980 publication noted that the local miners would "build a house themselves by encroaching on the waste and enclosing a small field". Their cottages were typically bungalows, with just one or two rooms and two or three beds. Landmarks No shops remain today in the village, but there is a pub called the Miners Arms, which originally served as the pay office for the miners. Nearby is Maeshafn Cave, near Big Covert Wood, a long-fissure cave which along with Gop Cave was cited in 1970 as the only caves in North Wales which have unearthed artifacts from the Bronze Age ... Llanferres
Llanferres is a village and community in the county of Denbighshire in Wales. At the 2001 Census the population of the village was recorded as 676, increasing to 827 at the 2011 census. Geography It is located 230 metres above sea level in the upper valley of the River Alyn on the A494 road between Ruthin and Mold. The village lies on the eastern slopes of the Clwydian Hills, just south of Moel Famau, and is wholly within the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Mold, Flintshire
Mold ( cy, Yr Wyddgrug) is a town and community in Flintshire, Wales, on the River Alyn. It is the county town and administrative seat of Flintshire County Council, as it was of Clwyd from 1974 to 1996. According to the 2011 UK Census, it had a population of 10,058. A 2019 estimate puts it at 10,123. Origin of the name The original Welsh-language place name, ''Yr Wyddgrug'' was recorded as ''Gythe Gruc'' in a document of 1280–1281, and means "The Mound of the Tomb/Sepulchre". The name "Mold" originates from the Norman-French ''mont-hault'' ("high hill"). River Alyn
The River Alyn ( cy, Afon Alun) is a tributary of the River Dee, in north-east Wales. The River Alyn rises at the southern end of the Clwydian hills and the Alyn Valley forms part of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The main town on the river is Mold, the county town of Flintshire. It lends its name to the constituencies of Alyn and Deeside in the UK Parliament and the Senedd. The River Alyn crosses the carboniferous limestone from Halkyn Mountain and north through the Loggerheads area before heading southeast, passing through Mold before reaching its confluence with the River Dee to the northeast of Wrexham. Loggerheads Country Park
Loggerheads Country Park is a country park in the village of Loggerheads, Denbighshire, Loggerheads, Denbighshire, Wales. The park has a wooded river valley that follows the course of the River Alyn and high cliffs from within the Clwydian Range of mountains, with views of the range's tallest mountain Moel Famau. The park has a visitor centre, woodland walks, and two landmarks—a historic Gristmill, corn mill called Pentre Mill, and a gorge called Devil's Gorge. History The site was the location of Pentre Mill, a corn mill dating to the early 19th century. The mill was powered by a water wheel near the River Alyn; the water wheel was closed in the 1940s and restored in the 1990s. The park was also the location of lead mining and quarrying. A494 Road
The A494 is a trunk road in Wales and England. The route, which is officially known as the Dolgellau to South of Birkenhead Trunk Road, runs between the terminus of the M56 motorway between Mollington and Capenhurst and the A470 at Dolgellau, Gwynedd. Its northern sections remain among the busiest roads in Wales. History The original routes into North Wales meant using fords when the Dee estuary was at low tide north west of Chester. But when the river was canalised in the 1730s several new coach roads were laid out through Sealand, Shotton and Queensferry. These were built by the Dee Company under the River Dee Act of 1743 to serve the hand-operated ferries which had replaced the fords. By 1861 the ferry at Shotton was steam operated, with an engine house on the Queensferry side.
