Madurai Monorail
Madurai Metrolite is the proposed metrolite system for the city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, part of a major expansion of public transport in the city. It is one of the projects devised by the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J.Jayalalithaa. As of March 2021, the proposal is still only on paper. Overview As the monorail market is estimated to be ₹72,000 crore (US$10 billion) in India, the then Governor of Tamil Nadu, Banwarilal Purohit announced in Legislative assembly that the Government of Tamil Nadu had decided to do a feasibility study for introducing monorail system in Madurai along with Salem, Thiruchirappalli, and Tirunelveli. Costs The government has earmarked a sum of about ₹60,000 crore (US$8.4 billion) for metro and monorail projects in Tamil Nadu. Madurai
Madurai ( , also , ) is a major city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu and the administrative headquarters of Madurai District. Kalavasal
Kalavasal ( ta, காளவாசல்) is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India. It is located at an altitude of about 162 m above the mean sea level with the geographical coordinates of (i.e., 9.930300°N, 78.095500°E). Madurai, Arasaradi, S. S. Colony, Arappalayam, Koodal Nagar, Vilangudi, Thathaneri, Simmakkal, South Gate and Yanaikkal are some of the important neighbourhoods of Kalavasal. Nelpettai
Nelpettai is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India. Muslims live in large clusters in Nelpettai. Albert Victor Bridge which is more than 133 years old, that connects Nelpettai and Goripalayam, is constructed over river Vaigai. Nelpettai has a non-vegetarian market that sells fish, meat such as mutton, chicken, etc. On East Veli street, a famous non-vegetarian restaurant namely Amsavalli bhavan biryani restaurant that functions beyond decades, is located. South Gate, Madurai
South Gate is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India, with the geographical coordinates of 9°54'39.2"N, 78°07'07.3"E (i.e., 9.910900°N, 78.118700°E) and is located at about 161 m above the mean sea level. Famous Meenakshi Amman temple is situated at a walkable distance of about 1 km from South Gate. Madurai city is constructed in such a manner that neighbourhoods and streets are arranged in all the four directions keeping the temple at their centre. Villapuram
Villapuram is a neighbourhood in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu state in the peninsular India. It is located at an altitude of about 155 m above the mean sea level with the geographical coordinates of (i.e., 9.895200°N, 78.120800°E). It was earlier known as Vilvapuram due to the presence of large quantities of Bael trees some times ago and then later renamed as Villapuram. In Madurai, the mandapas built for the deities to come and stay during festivals are called mandagapadis. In this way, the Bhavakai Mandapam, which is about 400 years old, is located in Villapuram. During the ten days of Chitrait festival in Madurai, Meenakshi mman and Sundareswarar, who come to this mandapam on the fourth day, bless the devotees from here until the evening. Avaniapuram is a neighbourhood in Madurai in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. As of 2011, the municipality had a population of 89,635. It was annexed with the Madurai Municipal Corporation in 2011. Tallakulam (Madurai)
Tallakulam or Thallaakulam is located in Madurai district, in the State of Tamil Nadu in India. There is a 'rest mandapam' (mandagappadi in Tamil language) called 'Ramanathapuram Sethupathi Mandapam' at Tallakulam. Simmakkal, Madurai
Simmakkal is a neighbourhood in Madurai district in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. Simmakkal as meant in the language of Tamil, 'Stone statue of Lion', has a statue at the heart of the neighbourhood. During the British period, out of the four giant walls on East Veli Street, West Street, North Veli Street and South Veli Street already existed, three of them except on West Veli Street were demolished by 'Marret', the then Collector of Madurai.
