Madrugada (song)
Portugal was represented by Duarte Mendes, with the song "Madrugada", at the 1975 Eurovision Song Contest, which took place on 22 March in Stockholm. "Madrugada" was chosen as the Portuguese entry at the Grande Prémio TV da Canção Portuguesa on 15 February. José Henrique Duarte Mendes (born 7 August 1947, Lisbon) is a former Portuguese captain and singer. He participated in Festival da Canção in 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1973 but he did not win until 1975 when he performed " Madrugada" (lyrics and song from José Luís Tinoco), about Colonial War and 1974's Carnation Revolution. He represented Portugal in Eurovision Song Contest 1975 The Eurovision Song Contest 1975 was the 20th edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. RTP1 (''RTP um'') is a Portuguese free-to-air television channel owned and operated by state-owned public broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP). It is the company's flagship television channel, and is known for broadcasting mainstream and generalist programming, including '' Telejornal'' news bulletins, prime time drama, cinema and entertainment, and major breaking news, sports and special events. José Mário Branco
José Mário Branco (25 May 1942 – 19 November 2019) was a Portuguese singer-songwriter, actor, and record producer. Biography José Mário Branco was born in Porto, the son of primary school teachers, and became politically involved in the early 1960s. This political activity during the dictatorship in Portugal and his opposition to the colonial war led him to seek exile in France in 1963. There he would eventually meet and collaborate with musicians such as Sérgio Godinho and Zeca Afonso, whose records he produced and recorded at the Château d'Hérouville studios. After the 1974 revolution Branco returned to Portugal and was the founder of the music ensemble GAC – Grupo de Acção Cultural. He composed a number of music scores for theatre plays. Paulo de Carvalho (born Manuel Paulo de Carvalho Costa, in Lisbon, on 15 May 1947) is a Portuguese singer. Career Carvalho co-founded the band The Sheiks in 1965. He sang and played the drums. He also played an instrumental role, either as a founder or a guest, of many other important Portuguese bands of the 1960s, among them bands such as Fluido, Banda 4 and Thilo's Combo. The Sheiks was Portugals answer to the Beatles. During the 1960s Portugal was ruled by an authoritarian dictatorship. This band came as a result of the climate in Portugal and captured the national mood. The people wanted the brightness of the Beatles sound and the Sheiks provided. The band sang songs such as Summertime, Missing You and Tell Me Bird. Though the band eventually broke up and Carvalho moved into contemporary Fado, the Sheiks have regrouped and performed in recent years.
