Madrid Central Mosque
The Madrid Central Mosque ( es, Mezquita Central de Madrid) is a building located in Cuatro Caminos neighborhood of Tetuán district. During its construction, its proximity to '' Estrecho'' (literally ''strait'', after the Strait of Gibraltar) metro station gave birth to the popular name of the ''Strait Mosque''. History After its dedication as Waqf land, it still took years to collect enough individual donations to construct the mosque. Finally opened in 1988, it became the first mosque in the capital since the end of the Islamic rule in 1085. Designed by the architect Juan Mora, it is the headquarters of the Union of Islamic Communities of Spain and the Islamic Community of Madrid. The term former mosque in this list includes any Muslim mosque (building) or site used for Islamic Prayer ( Salah) in Al-Andalus but is not so any longer. Spain is a Christian majority country, with Islam being a minority religion, practised mostly by the immigrants and their descendants from Muslim majority countries. Imam (; ar, إمام '; plural: ') is an Islamic leadership position. For Sunni Muslims, Imam is most commonly used as the title of a worship leader of a mosque. In this context, imams may lead Islamic worship services, lead prayers, serve as community leaders, and provide religious guidance. Thus for Sunnis, anyone can study the basic Islamic sciences and become an Imam. For most Shia Muslims, the Imams are absolute infallible leaders of the Islamic community after the Prophet.
