''Madonna and Child with Saint Catherine and Saint James'' is an oil-on-canvas painting by Lorenzo Lotto, created ''c.'' 1527, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. To the right are the two martyr saints Catherine of Alexandria and James the Great. The first written mention of the painting dates to 1660, in Boschini's ''Carta del navigar pittoresco la citò'', which called it "splendid... well-thought-out and memorable". The painting was then already in the Habsburg collections. Boschini misattributed it to Palma il Vecchio, but it is now thought to be by Lotto using a composition by Palma. Lorenzo Lotto (c. 1480 – 1556/57) was an Italian Painting, painter, draughtsman, and illustrator, traditionally placed in the Venetian school (art), Venetian school, though much of his career was spent in other north Italian cities. He painted mainly altarpieces, religious subjects and portraits. He was active during the High Renaissance and the first half of the Mannerism, Mannerist period, but his work maintained a generally similar High Renaissance style throughout his career, although his nervous and eccentric posings and distortions represented a transitional stage to the Florentine and Roman Mannerists.
