Macau At The 1988 Summer Paralympics
Macau made its Paralympic Games, Paralympic début at the 1988 Summer Paralympics in Seoul. Macau was represented by seven athletes competing in two sports, its largest delegation to date, and did not win a medal. Macau's Chong In Cheng competed in both athletics and swimming. The Paralympic Games or Paralympics, also known as the ''Games of the Paralympiad'', is a periodic series of international multisport events involving athletes with a range of physical disabilities, including impaired muscle power and impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, vision impairment and intellectual impairment. 1988 Summer Paralympics
The 1988 Summer Paralympics () were the first Paralympics in 24 years to take place in the same city as the Olympic Games. They took place in Seoul, South Korea. This was the first time the term "Paralympic" was used officially. Alberto Fernando Carvalho Oliveira (born 5 February 1965) was a leading Portuguese road cyclist in the late 1980s and early 1990s. His strength was that of a great all-rounder, able to win tough mountain stages, time-trials and sprints; he was also known as a reckless descender and celebrated some spectacular crashes. Macau At The Paralympics
Macau's Paralympic Committee was founded in 1979, and the territory first competed at the Summer Paralympic Games in 1988. It has competed in every edition of the Summer Games since then, but has never participated in the Winter Paralympic Games. Macau has also had an Olympic committee since 1987, which is recognized by Asian Olympic Committees and Portuguese Speaking Olympic Committees, but not recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Should athletes in the territory wish to compete in the Olympic Games, they would need to compete for the People's Republic of China. However, this conflicts with the Macau Basic Law (Macau must participate in any international activities as an independent entity different from mainland China), so no athletes in Macau have had the chance to participate in the Olympic Games so far.
