Mabel Colhoun
Mabel Colhoun (2 November 19051992), was a Derry-based pioneering photographer, teacher and archaeologist. Biography Mabel Remington Colhoun was born on 2 November 1905 in Derry to John Colhoun and Lizzie Johnston Gordon. Her family were originally from Inishowen, County Donegal. Colhoun trained in the Froebel educational technique. She worked as a teacher and was the first principal of the Preparatory Department in the Londonderry High School. She began working there in 1936 and retired in 1969. Colhoun also started a school in Deanfield, Derry and helped establish nursery schools throughout the 1950s and 1960s as the chair of the ''Londonderry Nursery School Association''. She worked extensively on the area from which her family came, and her work was published in ''The Heritage of Inishowen: Its Archaeology, Heritage and Folklore''. Derry
Derry, officially Londonderry (), is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fifth-largest city on the island of Ireland. The name ''Derry'' is an anglicisation of the Old Irish name (modern Irish: ) meaning 'oak grove'. Friedrich Fröbel
Friedrich Wilhelm August Fröbel or Froebel (; 21 April 1782 – 21 June 1852) was a German pedagogue, a student of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, who laid the foundation for modern education based on the recognition that children have unique needs and capabilities. He created the concept of the ''kindergarten'' and coined the word, which soon entered the English language as well. He also developed the educational toys known as Froebel gifts. Biography Friedrich Fröbel was born at Oberweißbach in the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt in Thuringia. A cousin of his was the mother of Henriette Schrader-Breymann, and Henriette became a student of his. Foyle College
Foyle College is a co-educational non-denominational voluntary grammar school in Derry, Northern Ireland. The school's legal name is Foyle and Londonderry College. In 1976, two local schools, Foyle College and Londonderry High School, merged under the Foyle and Londonderry College Act 1976 to form Foyle and Londonderry College. In 2011, the Board of Governors re-branded the school as 'Foyle College' and updated the school's crest. History Foyle College and Londonderry High School have been providing education for young people in the Derry area and further afield for more than 400 years. In October 2007, the school celebrated its 390th anniversary with a plaque commemorating headmasters of the school since 1617. Tower Museum
The Tower Museum is a museum on local history in Derry, Northern Ireland. The museum is located in Union Hall Place, within a historic tower just inside the city walls, near the Guildhall. The museum has two permanent exhibits; ''The Story of Derry'' which presents the history of Derry from its prehistoric origins to the present, and ''An Armada Shipwreck – La Trinidad Valencera'' which details the local shipwreck from the Spanish Armada. Tower Museum is the home of the Mabel Colhoun collection. The Museum also has temporary exhibits throughout the year. The top of the museum has an open air viewing facility, which provides panoramic views of the city centre and the River Foyle. The museum opened in 1992 and has won a number of awards. Ulster History Circle
The Ulster History Circle is a heritage organisation that administers Blue Plaques for the area that encompasses the province of Ulster on the island of Ireland. It is a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation, placing commemorative plaques in public places in honour of people and locations that have contributed to all genres of history within the boundary of the Irish province of Ulster, or contemporary country of Northern Ireland. Founded in the early 1980s, the group receives no government funding, unlike many similar organisations in the United Kingdom. Doreen Corcoran served as chair of the Circle from 1998 to 2009.
